Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

I checked my odometer this morning and I was wrong..it's 285 the Henderson route, because it was 295 this time through Nipton
OK, that makes sense. I am seeing 299 and 309 from Chino Hills on Google Maps.

We used to go to Casa Flores a lot. We like it there, but have you been to Toto's? It's in the Von's shopping center. Really good Mexican Seafood and the rest is very good too. Flores has better ambiance as Toto's is in a strip mall, but definitely worth a try.

I've been to that Von's but never Toto's. I'll definitely give it a shot one of these times.

One of my favorite steak places in that area is the Hacienda Steak House, which I'm sure you've been to. They have hit a home run with every meal I've had there. We used to stay there when it was the Gold Strike before it burned down and then head over to Calville and pick up the houseboat. I haven't stayed there since it's been the Hacienda, just would stop there on the way home sometimes when I had enough change to deposit from the T Bar piggy bank

I have stayed at the Hacienda so many times I can't count. I've never stayed at the Gold Strike although I wish I had. Yes, I like the Hacienda Steakhouse too, we've been happy there for sure. The best thing about the Hacienda is walking the walls for the Dam pictures.

Yea, I love that nostalgia too. It's amazing what those guys went through to build that dam. Long days working in treacherous conditions, then come home to a small house with no air!

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

I came home to So CA through Searchlight, and saw this thing zipping toward what I thought was Vegas. Now that's something you don't see everyday.

That must have been a sight!

I saw the one that hit in UT 1-2 years ago, it was supposed to be the size of a refrigerator. It kind of freaked me out as I was driving to Kanab around midnight and the all of a sudden, someone turned on the lights, looked like day light far a couple of seconds.

I fished Saturday and Monday morning (O'dark:30) at Willow and saw 30-40 meteors. A weird one came down, bright white then it changed to dark orange/red before it slipped behind the mountain. I was expecting a BOOM, but nothing...

The Lyrid meteor shower usually isn't this big that I've seen. To see a rare daylight meteor was pretty cool. I wish I wasn't so beat Sat night @ T Bar or I would have sat out on the deck and checked them out.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Hello! I am visiting Lake Mead from May 11-20. Essentially I'm hoping I might be able to find someone online who is going to be there at the same time and is planning on traveling up towards separation canyon. I'd really like to get dropped off there, or somewhere along the way so I could hike and raft on my own back down the river.

I've done something like this before although the last time I cut across part of the desert and wasn't able to get very far up. You can read about that trip on my blog if you are curious:
http://www.teamcrowbar.com/b71.php

If anyone has any advice or suggestions I'd be really interested to hear. I realize it's a lot to ask out of nowhere in a first post, but it seemed worth a try. Thanks!

We are starting to believe it's now too low again. Let's see what 12vMan has to say though. Good luck and welcome aboard.

WOW, pretty hardcore adventure! I can't help you with the ride up, but 30 years ago I may have tried something similar.
That is some wicked desert brush....Welcome aboard from me too.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Last I heard it was very iffy and that was about a month ago, lake has dropped some 5' since then and will continue to drop. I really want to make a run up there but don't see it happening this year and if we don't get a great snow pack next winter to over come what we will lose this year and surpass where we once were, cross off the summer of 2013 as well.

Other then that, welcome aboard

Welcome to the passion!

It's all pretty much been said already as we have discussed going up the canyon. We all want to but with the water level dropping like it is, your best chance at this point would be in a jet boat, like a North River. A friend has one at T Bar but I haven't talked to him about making the trip this year yet, plus we won't be there during your stay.

Where did you start your hike to the river to put in? Do you know where you were, and where did you end up? Cool little adventure. I'll have to check out your website more. I love that stuff. Keep us 'posted' if you are able to get a ride for sure.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Thank you everyone! Knowing this is a big help; I'll focus my upstream efforts in some other directions. I'm definitely still going up the Grand Canyon, even if I'm on foot again. I've got some routes I'm considering that may work.

And thanks for the welcome, I'm going to lurk around on these forums. I know next to nothing about boats but have recently been thinking that I should have some more adventures on the water.

To those interested, last time I set out with the intention to paddle my rubber raft upstream. Not happening, I realized pretty quickly. So I started hiking from Pierce Ferry.

Gigantic URL, but this is my exact path, L is where I spent the night in the canyon and M is where I took off from on the second day:

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

I'm heading to the river this weekend to catch the ever elusive 40# striped bass :D

Weight and pics coming soon.... :D (Let's just say, last night, was a good night for fishing "the river")

Post pad to get me to 900 :D

LOL, 450 of those on the Lake Mead thread too :D Keep it coming, you're a wealth of information.

T.C., you're an animal. Sounds like an awesome adventure. (I wonder how far up the GC my little jon boat could go? It runs in pretty skinny water...) Every time one of my fiends would plan a hiking trip, I'd ask him, where's the death march to this time? We hiked the Grand Canyon 3 times. First time south rim down 1 day and up the next day. Second trip south rim up and down the same day. Third trip was north rim to south rim in 1 day, that was a loooong day.

I thought you must have started @ PF with all of the travel through the reeds you talked about as I couldn't have imagined you came in through Riverside or Bunkerville off the 15. That would be a long trek down to Grand Wash Rd. You would have to traverse Grand Wash Bay on the Nevada side and then go up the GC from there. I am planning on doing an off-road trip in that area probably next season. It's getting too hot now.

Those caves are very cool. Are they in the LMNRA?
