Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Went back to Vegas wash again today(Friday)...Launched about 7:45 and headed up into the Wash..A little chop on the water but glassed off about 10:00...Threw the cast net for about an hour for 20 shad..Fished about 30 feet deep and caught stripers...Ran out of bait and went back to net shad for another 25 pieces..Fished until about 1:00 for 14 stripers 2 to 3 lbs...Beautiful day on the lake with a little sun burn to boot...Caught them from 17 to 35 feet deep today....

Sounds like good fishing there! Where were you finding the shad, back of coves or out deeper?

Click on the link in the middle of the page above the maps and you can request a free Lake Mead or Lake Mohave map from NDOW (you have to Email them).

I got the Lake Mead/Mohave map in today and it's pretty darn nice, huge and plastic coated. It's more of a boating map than a fishing map as it doesn't have depth contour lines, but it has all the coves marked. It's chopped off a bit above Gregg basin, so no detail going up into the Grand Canyon.

The shad was right where the wash enters the lake...Way up as far as you can go in 3 to 10 foot depth...

they love that spot,i still have my 6ft casting net in my boat but havent thrown it out around calville much. I remember catching all kinds of weird stuff in that net near wash area, turtles, tilipia, huge shad no striper would even look at,they chased the stripers around pulling that balloon it was funny, let them all go looked for smaller ones.

yeah no kidding...there is some weird stuff in that area...water is real scummy causing a ring around the boat...my boat loves to get washed off when I leave there...I did catch a tilapia one time and have seen those jumping gizzard shad...

Hey Dan. Link is bad. Can you paste it here and I'll fix your link. I can't find it after a quick search . . .

Sorry bout that, didn't do the link right........ Fixed now, same as John3's link.

The article says there is still time if they can find an operator.

Seems the park service dropped the ball and didn't give the operators enough time to make a decision, though as the article reads, there wasn't much interest. I'd think if someone was interested, they would continue negotiations instead of announcing that Echo is closing. (maybe not?....)

Well at least the ramp and such will still be there. Seems like 200,000 visitors a year would make it profitable, but I guess not.

Well it looks like I am heading down to Echo Bay on the 8th from SLC. Weather looks to be at least 60 degrees. Anyone know what passes I might realistically need? I have a fishing license. I have heard they don't check much for passes/stickers in the winter. Similar to how willow is?

The article says there is still time if they can find an operator.

The way I read it, 12/21/ was the deadline to find an operator for the water based facilities, and they need to amend the contract for the land based services including the trailer village :mad-new:
We had an extensive meeting in October with Park Service representatives about this happening to TBar. At this point we're good, and with Echo's fuel dock shut down boaters won't have any choice but TBar. I hope they post this so people see it at other marinas or there's going to be a lot of stranded boaters out there

I got my map in the mail! Great map. It's the exact map they used to give you at Calville when houseboating, except this one is in color and plastic coated. I guess I don't need to post it any more like I was going to ...if I ever got around to it

I haven't been checked at the ramps for stickers ever, and during the winter I usually go through the entrance check booths on their off hours... They were building a booth on the north end by the Valley of Fire turnoff on the lake road (S of Overton), not sure if it's open yet,,, or if it will be open when you go through. Legally you need the $30 vehicle and $30 boat lake stamp, then the $10 AIS sticker (I think).............

From the article, I think they are going to leave the boat storage lot open, if that helps at all.

I was out there several times this year and it looked like a ghost town, even the docks were pretty empty. (google earth the marina, looks like 70% of the slips empty) On busy weekends 10 years back you couldn't find a parking spot so they had to shuttle bus you to a remote parking lot, haven't seen that in a long time...

MEMO

Re: GC trip
:D

I just checked the elevation forecast and unfortunately it doesn't look good:

MONTH FORECAST ELE
Jan 2013 1122.86
Feb 2013 1122.90
Mar 2013 1119.65
Apr 2013 1114.47
May 2013 1110.37
Jun 2013 1108.67

Obviously, it's just a forecast based on the crystal ball theory so there's still a possibility we could receive another 10-12' which would get us there.

We could go ahead and set a date to meet at Sandy Point so that even if the trip is a bust we can still get together and do an overnighter complete with a BBQ & campfire. The beaches there are plentiful, and if we plan it late May the water temp starts to get bearable without a suit.

Post what weekend would work best and we can go from there.

For me: Memorial weekend 5/25-26 (1st) & 6/8-9 (2nd)
