Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

I always get this strange feeling when im on the lake, just before the wind comes sneaking around.
If you get stuck on the windward side of a storm, find the nearest cove and fish the biggest point inside it, facing the biggest waves,There be some big large mouth waiting for shad there.

I feel for fishrdan...he's been out there all week and I think Tues. was probably the only day the wind wasn't strong. Maybe he is hitting them points in the coves.

Yep, most of us can't plan week long outings around the weather. I agree with Skiya and hope the fan is turned off or even to low next week. Either way, grandsons and we will be out there. Lighting is OK if you are below deck and in a fiberglass hull, correct?

Forecast guessers have moved T-Storms to Friday. (The 13TH)

Well, you got me wondering so I found some info in THIS website:

"As you guessed, a big part of the risk here has to do with lightning's tendency to strike the highest point around ? i.e., you don't want this to be your head. Being on an open boat in a lightning storm is probably even more dangerous than swimming, suggests Mary Ann Cooper of the University of Illinois Lightning Injury Research Program, as "increasing your height by any amount increases your chances of being hit by a calculable amount. ? Avoid being the highest object anywhere, be it a beach, small open boat, pier, meadow, or ridge." According to the National Weather Service,

The vast majority of lightning injuries and deaths on boats occur on small boats with NO cabin. It is crucial to listen to the weather on a small aquatic vessel without a cabin. If thunderstorms are forecast, don't go out. If you are out on the water and skies are threatening, get back to land and find a safe building or vehicle.

The NWS goes on to say that boats with cabins are safer, particularly if they've been fitted with lightning protection, but one should avoid using the radio in a storm unless there's an emergency. "

I also found some threads on iboats as well, but most of what I read were people's experiences and at the end of the day the question was still there.

I know there are ways to outfit your boat with 'lightning protection'. Maybe I should look into that:cool:

So guess my wake tower makes a good lightning rod even if it is aluminum, it will be a high point.

I think one of the greatest things to come along is a dopler radar app. They work great and no one should be out there w/ out one. When the summer T-storms pop up you cant really tell which way they are heading until its to late. The radar app gives you a good idea what line the storm is tracking. I've been out a few times when the sky looks bad but the radar shows the storm tracking 5 miles away from me and no real danger, just stay put and let it pass. Don't like coming off the lake if I don't have to. Besides if you are in no danger the storms can give the sky some real character and make for some great photos.

Well,,, we survived :D And yeah, it was windy.

We pulled into Tbar 3PM Monday when the winds were supposed to be dying down, there wasn't another boat trailer in the parking lot.... We dunked the boat and headed out of the marina into 2-3'ers, with an occasional 4'er thrown in. Not really bad conditions, but certainly not ideal, kids were having fun bouncing around and getting soaked with spray. Stopped at Gateway Cove, made camp and called it a day. Tuesday was perfect and we ran east to Channel Island (original destination) to let the kids play around in the 60* water, Brrrr. Wednesday morning was really nice so we checked out a couple more beaches, then the wind started going again so we headed back to camp and the kids messed around on our beach. On Monday, Thursday was forecast as be nice,,, but when the wind kept going all night and into the morning I knew something wasn't right so we packed up camp and headed back. The kids were tired of the wind as it's not fun getting into cold water, then being frozen by stiff winds.

It was a weird trip for sure, but everyone had fun. The kids were more interested in swimming than fishing, and so be it, let them do what they want as it's their vacation too. I only caught 1 dink striper  while the kids were swimming, but we didn't do much fishing. It's kind of ironic as I like fishing in windy conditions, but it didn't pan out on this trip. If we had been boat camping, instead of beach camping, we would have done a lot of fishing. JJ, that cove we were in would have been perfect for fishing and I marked a couple good holes. Oh well....

On our way back in I swung by the Temple to let the kids check it out close and in person. I though it was pretty cool, my son was indifferent, and my daughter thought "I bet there are a lot of lizards that live there". LOL

All in all, I really liked Tbar, pretty interesting part of the lake.

Oh yeah, I launched and retrieved off the west side of the launch ramp, too shallow by the dock.

Glad you had fun and made it back safely. Forecast keeps changing for Weds-Sat next week. We will be out there to see how accurate they are! Glad to see someone else thinks the ramp slope is very slight.

A favorite quote of mine, "The weatherman lies!" I've seen it too many times where the bad weather never pans out or something drops in that they never predicted. For our trip, the weather forecast kept changing every day... Monday was supposed to be windy from 6am -10am, then Monday morning it was extended to 3pm....

When I was pulling the boat I had to stab the trailer 3-4 times to get the trailer level on the pitched ramp, top of the fenders lapping at the water surface. I've learned if the trailer isn't level, even by a few inches, my boat loads crooked.

Have fun out there and I hope you have better weather than we did.

Sounds like you all had a great time, wind blowing, big waves, and cold water make big memories.Fishing is only one tenth of the trip, lol, from buying gas to preping food and the drive there, these are important steps.Tying the boat off at the marina dock while someone runs to the truck for something forgotton. Not to mention the checking out the restrooms, finding the slot in the tires where you exit the no wake zone,The lake experiance is so big, i just wanted to share my thoughts of this.

I bet there were some good holes there fishr.glad u all had a great and safe trip.Good call on bringing the group back in.

Where did you park your vehicle and trailer? We were able to park near (100 yards) the ramp last Oct. but it has been mentioned here that you can't do that now.

On the dirt area east of the launch ramp. There's a break in the launch ramp's curb about 50-100 yds up, go through that, loop around and park it. When we got back there were a couple vehicles by ours. I don't know if that's what everyone does at Tbar, but it seemed in line with what I've seen at other launch ramps. As long as you are off the concrete ramp, I don't think they care where you park.

You can't put up a picture of Lake Powell without my putting my 2 cents worth in.
We're going to Powell next week. I'll post some new Picts when we get back. In the meantime I thought I'd put up some old ones.
