Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Mike, I see you joined the boat meetup group. I guess I'll see you out there soon. By the way my name is Ed.

I thought about joining your group, it sounds like great times and it would be nice to meet some new people but I would be a very rare visitor since we already have a sizable active group out of Temple Bar, and our regular beach for the year will be by Mushroom which is only about 4 miles from the marina. We do like to take occasional trips up around East point to the Gyps and also up Overton Arm, so we can do the north shore of Virgin as well.

I don't know what gas will be like come summer, but I don't have a good feeling about it. The big block really sucks it down fast. Because of that we have gotten used to pulling behind the PWC's even though some of us have towers. I usually pull for maybe 2hrs/day, and most of that is tri-tubing.

The pic on the group site looks like Sandy Beach. That was a favorite last night stay for our houseboat trips out of Callville.

I have some friends that have a 50' Sea Ray in Callville and we take turns going back and forth to visit. They're usually coming our way because they like coming to T Bar because it's so secluded. They just joined some other good friends of mine in T Bar that have a 28' tri-toon with a small block i/o. They loaded up and went into the Grand Canyon last weekend. That's awesome news because we've missed doing that for many years now. They wrote on my FB wall "Yep...3 miles past Columbine Falls! It was GREAT!!!!!!....and we only hit one sandbar!!" :D

Anyone planning on going into the Canyon, please let me know.
Many years ago the Power Squadron group I belonged to had an annual Thanksgiving Cruise. We would Launch at Temple Bar, camp above Sandy Point and take a day trip into the Canyon up to Separation Canyon. Someone including me would inevitably get stuck on a sandbar and need to be pulled off. That's why we always did it as a group.
It's been a high point of my boating life and I'd love to do it again

Some of us have been talking about a TBar launch, we'll have to do that this year and hook up w/ your group. That Grand Canyon run sounds fun and would like to do one, never been up that far.

I've done the Separation run many times! It's awesome to get that far up, BBQ some burgers and relax in the grandeur of the canyon. Maybe we can set something up for Memorial weekend or June. Let's see if anyone on here posts any interest.

Just an FYI for everyone, Temple Bar Days will be Memorial Weekend. Food, folks, fun, games. There is a charge of $25 but it includes t-shirt, food, games & prizes. I won the pool tourney last year!...mind you that ain't sayin' much

Awesome is right... (Tbar forecast)

Monday 75*
Tuesday 83*
Wednesday 85*
Thursday 79*

With lows around 60

Can't wait!

mz, I hope the weather holds out for you (and I)

I know your havin' fun today...really nice in Vegas. So I go look at the forecast for our 1st 2 days out and 40% chance of rain which to me means 60% chance that I don't care either way. It's going to be 80*!:D

I would absolutely love to have the right equipment to be out there and patrol the lake today. I want to see the waves breaking on the Islands in the Overton Arm. With that said, if you are out with the wrong equipment, and don't know how or where to ride this stuff out. God bless you

Cottonwood, just outside the tires will be fun today too. Holy flyin' flip!

The Spirit of the Lake was with you! ;)

Yea, it's funny how some years for me it got so bad that when I showed up they would say - 'here he is, and here comes the wind!'..and yet I've also gone years in a row with the most awesome weather you could hope for, like glass at 2pm. We've had a good streak going on for quite a few years now....

Most of the bad winds we've had lately have been short and to the point. They will come up in front of an afternoon squall and be gone in a matter of a couple of hours. The important thing on Mead is reading the weather, and being aware of wind reports. I usually leave the VHF on 16 with the squelch up just in case.

true that
being born and raised in wyo i'm no stranger to the wind

there were always a few days each spring when we would get the wind for 3 or 4 days wind, there in the marinas, but by and large hasn't ever been enough to ruin a trip. have seen the break water at L M & LV B M moving and bobbing pretty good. have seen LV B and bull frog marinas, both broken loose and mess up the docks and crush some boats

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Stopped at my buddy's house this evening to talk about his trip into the Grand Canyon last weekend. He said basically don't get your hopes up for making a trip this year. He most likely won't go again. Getting up past Hells Kitchen into Iceberg Canyon the lake is 15-20' deep and the natural falls that was around Paiute Point is still a narrower 'rapid' area with a small noticeable drop of around 6-12".
Once you get past Pierce Bay the level is 4-10'. The river itself is at the normal 15-20' a mile or so past that.

So it's the area around Pierce Bay that will give anyone trouble in just a few weeks judging on how the lake is receding at this point.

I'm confirmed that I can't get up until 4-22 & 23. I've got a day's work on the trailer Sat then some lake time Sunday and come back Monday. sorry I missed everyone's schedule..I'm really gonna need that beer owed me too :D

A late thanks Skiya for the invite a few posts back with your group. Who knows? We haven't laid down any real plans for the summer except for going to the lake!

12v, that kinda sucks, I was really looking to up the canyon. Oh well it is what it is. I read the BOR is planning on releasing 9 1/2 maf of water this year into Mead from Powell due to the equalization plan of Powell and Mead. We normally get something like 8 1/4 maf, don't know if that will help. Last year I think we got just over 12 maf from Powell.

I guess we'll just have to meet up at mushroom

I always get this strange feeling when im on the lake, just before the wind comes sneaking around.
If you get stuck on the windward side of a storm, find the nearest cove and fish the biggest point inside it, facing the biggest waves,There be some big large mouth waiting for shad there.

Sounds Great. Memorial Weekend or most of June is OK right now. The time is getting close, I suggest we setup a firm date so we can plan around it. Perhaps Memorial Weekend, 4 days May 31 thru June 3?

Memorial Weekend is good with me. We'll be there Thurs night through Monday. The dates are 5/24 (Thursday) through Memorial Day 5/28 (Monday). The marina is having Temple Bar Days on Sat, Sun & Mon. I will look at the event flyer when I get home this evening and see which day would be best to get together on the lake, since there will be activities to participate in at the marina as well. As I said in a previous post, I'm not sure how the lake level will affect a trip into the canyon that far out. I'm heading out in 2 weeks and will be on the lake that Sunday with a buddy that went up 2 weeks ago. If we get out early enough I think we'll head that direction up so I can see just how shallow and/or treacherous it really is first hand. Looking forward to it.
