Well,,, we survived :D And yeah, it was windy.

Glad the trip went well other than the wind. Kids always seem to find the good in things...even 60 deg. water!

Cool pics John, love the tight slot canyon shots.

JJ, their ice cream is in cups now but it is still soo good on a hot summers day. You can't go to Dangling Rope and not have ice cream.

I lost my gas cap last year @ D.R. while fueling, came right off the chain. So I go to buy a cap from the marina and nothing fits. Chaparral's caps are unique to Chap and not a universal fit. Had to put one on tight w/out stripping the plastic threads and it held for the rest of the trip. I ordered a new one from the Chap dealer when we got home and was told Chap will be switching over to a universal thread and will stop using the current caps. Since Chap is the only one that uses this type of cap, the gas cap company will no longer make them and when their gone, their gone. I bought two.

A favorite quote of mine, "The weatherman lies!"

Forecast is great....until we head out weds AM. 80's are a little too warm for this time of year anyway! A lot of last minute stuff was done tonight and my list is scratched off. My wife's list has a way to go.

Have you figured out your float plan or just winging it? Just wondering if you've decided which way you're headed - right turn or left. Just an FYI, if you're going right and planning on checking out Hualapai, word is that the beach is just awesome, and it's on an island now with the water still up this high.

It'll be an awesome trip

We're going west first and going to find Napoleon's Tomb. Then back east to that Mushroom place by the Campanile that you mapped for me and if the doesn't look suitable for the 35MPH winds, we'll try to get to Hualapai Bay for the first night. Also want to check out Gregg's Hideout and Teal Coves. Teal Coves might be a great spot for the first night also.

Take a peek at 36* 04' 28.84"N - 114* 20' 12.55W. Might be a nice place to hide from wind.

We have a better plan than our first time out and you have been a great help 12V.

Thanks.:D

I think that's where we stopped with the great beach, just west of Hualapai bay. The SE tip of the island has an awesome beach that's really shallow, while the south side is plenty deep to beach the boat. If you stop there, you'll probably find evidence of my rug rats in the sand :D

Wednesday's SW 25-35MPH winds shouldn't be bad in your 25'er. We pressed out in our 18'er Monday with NW 30MPH winds, and we had the wind coming from the "wrong" direction. We were running down hill though...

Have a good time out there!

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Hi guys. I'm new here. JJ suggested that I check out the forum. (hey JJ. It's Jerry)
I'm still doing it the old fashioned way... paddles and oars. Over the years, I went from an inflatable raft, to sit-on-top kayaks, and now 2 16-ft canoes.
I'm hoping to get out to the lake soon. I've got an electric trolling motor that I'm planning to mount on the side of one of the canoes. Should be fun once it's all hooked up!

Thanks fd, we'll look for that beach and the marks from ur rugrats! I'll bet that down hill slope was a bit too gradual for the headwind:)

Welcome aboard Jerry!

Hope the trip goes well mzahn. Need some pics of the beach at Hualapai. Mushroom will be pretty good regardless of wind direction, you can orient a few different directions in there.

Here's my Lake Powell contribution. Twilight Canyon. August 2007:

Good to see another Mead boater on here Jerry. Have you ever visited Willow Beach and gone up river with your yak or canoe? I fish there a lot and always thought it be fun going up/down river by human power.

Nice little vids QC. Those kinds of canyons were definitely one of my highlights. You never get tired of that scenery.

Have a good time out there!

Man did we have a rough time! This is long winded, but here was our 24 hour trip to TB-

Spare tire mount broke between ranger station and store. Kids in car behind us retrieved it.

Set out with gusts to 30. Had a rough time picking my son up at the dock, boat died and wouldn't crank and blew into dock and added some pinstripes to the starboard side. Boat then cranked and started and we headed for Hualapai. Too windy so we decided to get into the bay on the north side of the temple. Bad idea to cross a large body of water. Then the wind really picked!

We were just west of the temple with storm clouds to the se and sw in 5' + swells and it dies again. I thought my wife, daughter and grandson were going to die of fright. My son tried to keep them calm while we were falling left and right in the waves. I got on channel 16 and notified the NPS of our situation. They kept in contact and let us know that they didn't have any rangers in the area.

As I was looking at the boulders that the wind would likely force us into I tried the key again for the 20th time or so and it fired. We got back into little burro bay and figured that we'd hunker down. We anchored and floated for about an hour and figured we just stay there for the night.

Then it got worse. So windy even in a narrow, shallow area that we couldn't get the anchor to hold. We circled around and tried to find a spot where my son could get off of the bow and try to put stakes in the rock to tie off to and as we approached, it died again. This time we were blown aground and dead in the water.

We tried to push off with the dock hook and it wouldn't budge. After about 10 minutes it fired again. Wife and son climbed into the water and pushed us off the rocks. I decided that our only resolve was to get back to the marina. We headed back out toward the bigger water and advised the NPS of our status. After getting near the temple, it was real bad still and my wife said that she couldn't go through that again. We went back and circled around in the small water and called NPS again. I figured it would be better to get family into a safer boat and pay for a tow before it died again.

The NPS contacted the marina and they called me back and said that they didn't want to send his guys out in this weather. At that point I decided to just go for it and head directly into the wind and wherever I ended up, hug the shoreline back to the marina. By the time we got back into temple bay, the waves were down to 3' and the gusts had backed off. The wind was coming straight from the marina and we slowly crossed and made it back to the dock.

Another wind storm came up and we had to stay tied to dock while trailer sat ready. I walked over to marina office dock to see about renting a slip for the night and sign said closed due to weather. So we loaded it in the wind on third attempt. Rented a RV space in the trailer spaces next to Parrot Heads place and camped for the night.

This morning started out with 20 mph winds as we ate breakfast in the boat and watched the white caps from the camp site. We waited until after 9:00 and the wind kept blowing. Another boater that stayed grounded the day before stopped by and said that he wasn't going out again today. Forecast for tomorrow is t-storms. We decided lesson learned and packed it up glad to have survived.

That was a scary day. Hoped to get some good pics, but this was all I could get.

Lake Mead ^^^^^ Been there, done that, have the pinstripes.

jj,

Yeah, I usually post something about the speed and safety when I have posted those vids from Twilight Canyon. I have very large trim tabs and can keep her on plane down to 12 MPH. I was running between 14 - 18 MPH that whole time despite it seeming faster. That said, you can also see that I swing way wide on each turn to get as early a look into the next straightaway each turn. You would have had to been on board to know how safe that really was. There were three similarly sized boats on that run and we all had 8 or so aboard. I don't think one passenger was scared despite how tight it appears. You can hear me say something about 40 ft at the end of the second video. I went a little further, but chickened out at around 20 ft. depth. Lake Powell was 100 ft down that year. Amazing place and those slot canyons actually become more dramatic with the water level down.
