Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

The maps QC has are very interesting, lots of detail. I got them a couple years back. (Thanks QC!)

the water looks like it's in a washing machine over there..

Yup, the lake can turn angry in a matter of minutes. I find it strange that the weather can go from perfectly calm for hours on end, to 20-30 MPH (or more) sustained winds in the blink of an eye. You can hear and see if coming across the lake and the first time you experience it, you're thinking, what the heck is that. I've been out in blue bird skies and the only indication of foul weather was the sound of a freight train rumbling up the lake and a frothy stew rolling along with it. Time to get the snot beaten out of you,,, or run for cover!

I have a VERY detailed, but old set of Mead maps. Great bottom contour detail, and I can email them. HUGE files! And I can't remember where I found them but they are USGS type stuff.

I have seen the USGS maps online but they can't be downloaded from where I viewed them. I'll put a stop to the TMI :D

Thank You QC :)

BTW, you need to look at all three to get all the legend info. Especially check the Overton Arm example for shore contour info.

Very Nice. To the thumb drive tonight and the color plotter tomorrow!

EDIT: Off subject, I just had an idea for putting some new wall paper in our master bath. I will run it by the wife tomorrow night when I bring home the scrolls. She has wanted it remodeled for some time now.

Too busy to plot today but I did print B/W 11 x 17 to bring home for further review. I can get quality custom wall covering printed from any file from what I learned today. ;)

I'm with fishrdan, She's been talking about a trip to see parents in Nebraska for a couple of weeks before the end of the year and I can surprise her when she gets back. I have some planning to do! :p

That's what I texted to their parents when they sent me the pics. I am at home getting boat ready for the next trip. Hopefully we can get things aligned to take both boats for a weekend soon.

Not sure how the weather was on the lake today, but this is unheard of for this time of year.....nice and cool after a much needed rain. The low temp of the day at 1:31PM!.:)

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Just heard on the news that 6 boats capsized in Callville Bay today....Hope everyone is safe. Likely wind related.

I heard about that, they said 20 people were affected but there were no related injuries. They were also reporting (unrelated to the Callville incident) a mans leg was severely injured by a boats prop, he was airlifted so they said. They were also reporting up to 50 mph wind gusts on Mead, and were asking boaters not to launch by mid-afternoon.

We went to Mohave, launched about 9:30ish am, and stayed out till about 3:30ish pm. Winds were out of the south at what I guesstimate at 20-25 mph sustained. Really wasn't gusty at all, managable 1 to 2 ft chop, and rainy. We headed north out of Cottonwood, and anchored in Arizona Bay which was fairly well protected from the wind and chop. Swam, picnic'ed, and enjoyed each others company. Then we went north some more into our favorite sandy cove in Nevada bay. Waves were pushing on the back of the boat, but the anchor held fine. Water temps were nice, but may have felt cooler had it been in the 100's. All in all not a bad day on the lake.

Funny how the weather conditions differed so much between the 2 lakes.

John

ETA: I don't know about Mead, but we pretty much had Mohave to ourselves, very few other boaters. Maybe because Mead is closer and few want to drive all the way to Harry Town to get to the lake?

National Park Service
U.S. Department of the Interior

LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA News Release

For Immediate Release: July 5, 2012
Release No.: 2012-24

Rescues: Rangers Rescue over 40 visitors from the waterways of Lake Mead
National Recreation Area.

LAS VEGAS – On July 4, 2012, The Lake Mead National Recreation Area
experienced monsoon weather that caused Park Rangers to respond to six
vessel accidents, two disabled vessels, and thirteen visitor welfare
checks. Additionally, Rangers responded to four calls for Emergency
Medical Service. Two of the medical responses required Advanced Life
Support. One of them was a near drowning of a nineteen year old male who
went into the water to take a swim without a personal flotation device near
Echo Bay. He began to have difficulty swimming and began to drown when he
was rescued by bystanders. The male began to go in-and-out of
consciousness. Rangers from the National Park Service and Nevada Division
of Wildlife responded and found the male without a pulse, dilated pupils,
and foaming from the mouth. Rangers immediately began CPR and were able to
restore perfusion and continued airway maintenance with the assistance of
Echo Bay Marina staff. The patient was later airlifted by Mercy Air to the
University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Throughout this weather event Rangers rescued over 40 visitors from the
waterways of the Lake Mead Nation Recreation Area.

The National Park Service advises all visitors to plan their trip
accordingly and take no unnecessary risk on the waterways during the
monsoon season and to wear a US Coast Guard approved personal flotation
device.

Busy day. What's really cool is that they still found time to personally deliver 13 welfare checks on a National Holiday. Now that's service!!

I took this as a tongue in cheek type comment and if so, that's funny!:D

The Rangers did do a great job out there with many crossing the bay trying to make it back to the ramp in the wind-driven swells.

Totally tongue in cheek. Honestly seemed like a very busy day. Just funny the way they put that. I actually would enjoy being on patrol there in bad weather. That place is always a challenge, and If I am not responsible for kids I like it.
