Re: Calling All Ontario Members

We are on Bayview cres just past the park . The dock is also wood 4 by 10 foot sections made from 2 by 6 beams and 5'4 top...My father made bases out of dexion shelving he got free from work with a wood base 20 years a go and they are still working great..They lay on top and never get stuck but are a pain to lift in and out ( heavy)....Unfortunately my dock is about 80' and maybe 5' deep at the end, with a nice 8 by 12 pad to lounge on...The sand is nice and hard and basically weed free to the end of the dock....I made A dolly to flip the sections on their side and roll them to shore....or float them out on a canoe since i usually get stuck doing it myself in the spring. They are heavy but i love every moment ....I can clean the beach and cut the grass, trim the hedges and everything else all day long as long as i can stare at the lake...To some it seems awe full but to me its heaven.

Ditto on the lake view. I try real hard not to take it for granted.
Our main dock sections are are 16'x4', three 2x8s running length ways and 2x6 for decking. It was originally a community dock for a development up by Snug Harbor. They used a fork lift to put it in and out, but I put a drum under each end to float it out and use the winch on the Jeep to pull it back in. The legs and feet are steel with 12" square feet but the lake bottom is mud and weeds. If they don't get stuck in the mud, they get hooked up under a root!

It's been a heck of a cold winter and was wondering about what to do with the boat motor in the spring ....I just bought the boat last summer and its the first I/0 . I usually have done the winterizing on the other motors but opted to have Lakeview marine in Manchester do it for me...I was happy with their service. Is there anything special you need to do to prep it for starting the engine in the spring...For example is it necessary to top up the engine oil a bit so it drains and covers things a bit ...i would think the oil would mostly drain to the bottom...Since i just got it there are a few things to be done ....I want to install a new thermostat as well as impeller....Both are working but who knows the last time they were changed. The bellows, gimball and starter were replaced just before i got it.I also did the trailer bearings. New tires are in its future.

You don't need to re-oil the cylinders unless it's been sitting for more than a year. You definitely need to put the muffs on and fire it up before you put it in the water. Since there's more than one method of winterizing, check to make sure all the water drain plugs are in and all the hoses are hooked up. I drain the fuel water separator and run the carb dry in the fall. This gives you a long crank time in the spring and some times have to prime the carb. But it also gets the oil moving before it fires up.
Depending on the configuration of your engine box, thermostat and impeller aren't a hard job.

Apologies to the rest of the Ontario members. I think we kind of hijacked the thread.

I don't see that any apologies are necessary guys. The thread was started to discuss things of local importance. Asking or giving advice on where to get local services and reports on the quality of service received are important and of interest to other Ontario boaters. Discussing service details could wander into technically specific details that would be better discussed and maybe better answered in another thread, but hey, this thread should be just a friendly conversation. So, sorry, I can't accept your apologies. How stereotypically Canadian are we? - Grandad

+1 agree there GD! Great way to source local "Stuff" and to keep the discussion "fluid"!

And ya... totally stereotypical eh! My wife's Finnish and still finds Canadians politeness amusing! :)

Fire it up ceasarea! This is the only way to check that all bolts and nuts have been tightened for summer use.The thermostat should have been part of that lay up!

Re: Calling All Ontario Members

I am having my local mechanic do the thermostat and impeller...He has the same engine, and i trust the guy 100%....Honest , reliable and only does what needs to be done....and he charges for the time it takes him...I just don't have the time in the spring with three kids and all that needs to be done around the cottage.

Re: Calling All Ontario Members

Hey Folks,
Great forum. This my first post. Our boating experience in Ontario centres around Thunder Bay and area on Lake Superior.
I been active the lake for 15-20 years. Just got back into it 3 years ago with the family now ( previously it was just the guys fishing). We started back with a 26 ft. Bayliner Cierra. We (wife re doing the interior) worked on her for a winter. All new sunbrella and frames, new upholstery in cockpit ,some re wiring and good buff and wax. Mechanically she ran great. The family loved being on the lake.
Bought a 35ft Cooper Prowler mid season last year. Had no trouble getting rid of the old Bayliner. The wife and kids and granddaughter love our new one. Planning on many more multi day outings as possible in the upcoming season. And yes complete as much maintenance and repair as possible myself.
Thanks great to be here.

Hi Cap. I?m a little late responding, but welcome to Iboats! That prowler sounds like a nice boat. Maybe when you?re out on the water after it softens up a bit, you can take some pictures of the boat and where you cruise. I've never boated on Superior. I?ve updated the attached PDF with your info. - Grandad

Hi cybury. Welcome to Iboats. I hear you about restorations. I think you have to enjoy the work for it to be worthwhile. It doesn't usually pay financially unless you're set up to quickly flip a boat that you aquired really cheap. I've added your info to the roster. - Grandad

So how's everybody liking this winter so far?? I think it'll be June before the lake starts to thaw, let alone the boat can get tugged out of its snowbanks! This is crazy.

The seven day forecast is showing day time temps on the plus side for the hole seven days. Maybe this is the first sign of spring. I hope, I hope, I hope!

Hi ceasarea.
I hate to tell you, but there's no noticeable change in the ice yet. Except for some of the snow melting off of the top of it. However someone said there were white caps out off of Washburn Island about a week ago. The water was coming up through the ice fishing holes and blowing around on top.
But then again it doesn't take long once you get the temperature inversion in the water.
