There was a post earlier today about getting some iboat decals. Tashasdaddy directed us to a site that was known to some of ya'll. Someone mentioned their iboats coffee cup and how important it was to have that really good cup of joe.

In my early teens I learned how to drink coffee so I could stay awake at sea on a mid watch. Just something about those easy swells, the rockin motion and no sleep that had me doing anything to stay awake.

Uncle Sams jitter juice did just that for me. Over the years, however I have searched high and low for that special blend that really, really hit the spot.

Yeah, I used to do Barnies at the mall or Starbucks or even good ol' Dunkin Donuts, but somehow, someway I was left wanting.

Today my brew of choice is a 3 to 1 mix of Yuban Dark Roast and Pilon. Pilon is a Cuban coffee that you may not find other than around the Cuban community. Luckily, I have that here near Tampa. Eight tablespoons and one quart of water gives me the blend "that helps me hang on" as Jimmy Buffet would say. So what say you. I would welcome all of your caffienated concoctions. :)

I can't go past Lavazza ora. I prefer to grind the beans myself but unground beans are a bit hard to find in my neck of the woods.

Did you know that properly roasted beans actually contain less caffeine than instant coffee? I have a cup of coffee every night just before bedtime, it works a treat.

I prefer the Cafe Bustelo to Pilon. It has a richer smoother flavor for me.

Rick,
The flavor you're trying to re-create is missing one key element - the aromatic flavor of NSFO that permeates everything aboard ship. Gotta have a little petroleum distillate along with your cream and sugar. LOL.:D:D:D

Well I guess I'm the oddball  I'm not a coffee drinker! I'm a tea totaller, Lipton is my tea of choice, everything else tastes washed out, Not that I don't love the smell of fresh ground, or fresh brewed coffee, and occasionally I have a cup, or 2, for a tasty boost, it goes good with cigarettes! Although, I hear that tea has more caffiene in it then coffee? I can appreciate a good cup of coffee, but just don't give me any food with it, I'm not accustomed to that, I'd get sick. Starbucks, and the like, has no attraction to me.

You know that if you put the right mix of creamer and sugar it really does not matter much what kind it is.

Re: Calling coffee drinkers

Fantastic, looks like we're just gettin warmed up here. For the record, I never put anything in my coffee. Just black, thank you.

For the replies..can't imagine what eggshells would do to my pot of joe???, but I got chickens, so plenty of shells. Can you fine tune that for me?

TD, I never wash the pot. It only gets rinsed out.

Ladyfish, I had a six month stint in Jamaica, and had forgotten how good that Blue Mountain coffee was. Maybe I can find a way to work some of that in my budget.

Look, I'm always in the garage. Actually, my garage is bigger than my house. Wifey has mentioned I may have to sleep ther sometimes. :confused:Lot's of car and boat projects, so the smell of petroleum seems to linger. LOL. Also I have been a bean grinder and the Sam's Columbian blend has been used before. I will have to give the Bustelo a shot. Just needs to be that dark heavy Cuban blend. And mate from down under, don't know that I have seen Lavarra..

So far so good..thanks, all, for the input..:)

Re: Calling coffee drinkers

Ihave heard people put a little chicory root in their coffee.
it kind of takes the bitter edge off the coffee.
I think the coffee you get out of machines is chicory

The bolder/darker the better. We just got a nice sampler here at work called 'cowboy coffee'. Not bad at all.

I do that on occasion. does taste good.

I ONLY use a french press and grind my own. filtered water, any kind of whole beans and the french press gets me a good cup of coffee. I usually just get the 1lb bag of whatever is on sale at the grocery store. even doing it that way I get many compliments from people who get a mug at my house.

Darker/Bolder Strongest stuff I can get my hands on and black only.....
Green Mountain here in VT is okay..... Baronet Coffee in CT is good..... I am afraid of Jamaicin Blue .... I could become addicted and have to get a 2nd job.

My wife says that my coffee will strip the enamal from your teeth! I am the only coffee drinker in the house.

Re: Calling coffee drinkers

Just have my daily 8 cups of black Folgers classic roast. No big deal.

Since this thread in on coffee and eggshells were mentioned, how about some hardcore coffee trivia, that showcases the importance of this wonderful brew?

Navy guys probably know this one.

Taking a tour on the USS Olympia, the oldest steel warship in the world, there was a stop at what I thought was one of the largests coffee makers I have ever seen. Certainly small by today's ship standards, it was probably about the size of a commercial refridgerator, serving about 400 sailors.

It was basically operational around the clock, with the mess crew to keep hot coffee of some sort, always available. They had to improvise whenever necessary, as old cofee was never thrown out. If you could make good coffee, you were "the guy".

Egg shells would take some of the bitterness out and there were many other tricks, to keep the crew happy.

The most interesting part was the name for a ship's coffeemaker of that era.
It was called a "scuttlebutt". Anyone see the significance of the term and it's relationship to coffee?

Re: Calling coffee drinkers

Well, mscher, my Navy days were some time ago, but I still do a little scuttlebuttin today.
And in between watches if you needed a place to hang out and "chew the fat" the galley and mess hall were good places to do that.
Just another place to catch up on Admiral Zumwalts Z-grams. The start of the softening of the US Navy....:(
However Z gram 35 let beer vending machines into the em barracks!

In the Army when in the field, the cook would just dump some coffee into a 15 gallon pot of water and let her boil. You had to pick the grounds out of your teeth.
