that is the OMC Sterndrive

it has no other names, but is often referred to as the electric shift stringer mount drive made from 1964-1977

it is the predecessor to the 400 and 800 series

Photobucket has a 'Share Option' then select get code, then paste it in your message.

P.S. I think the outdrive is an OMC Stringer, not 100% sure as I am a Volvo and Mercruiser man myself

It's an OMC stringer drive. Sorry.

PS: In photobucket, use the IMG code, not the HTML code if you want your pictures to show.

Re: Can anybody tell me what outdrive this is???

The problem with them is when they fail. OMC went out of buisness in 98, and the last stringer drive was made in 85.
There are no techs with tools and training to fix those drives. Some online help, and lots of expensive aftermarket parts. Just very few with experience to do the work.

Oh I see, well that's not good... Should it be a big enough reason not to buy the boat? It is a good deal the guy isn't asking a lot for it...

It would be a deal breaker for me. You can not replace it with any other outdrive setup due to the size of the hole in the transom and the thickness of the transom.
I wouldn't recommend an OMC to any first time boat owner that isn't a skilled marine tech that knows the drives and how to repair them.
Engine wise, they are GM engines. The drives are the problem.
The shift cable alone on a stringer can run over $400 let alone the labor to install it.

Mercruiser drive behind a Chevrolet engine

the only combo to look for when shopping as far as I'm concerned

here's why:

NEW replacement Mercruiser outdrive with 3 yr warranty from SEI: $1200

NEW 400 or 800 series drive from BRP with no warranty once used: $7230 (and only a few models are available upper and lower) lower unit is $4550

True, I do know Merc was started by OMC and so was Evinrude. I always felt OMC was superior....maybe the newer Mercs are better.

Not even remotely true.... (and OMC have never been superior. Count the awards and 'firsts' Merc has.)

Outboard Motor Company was formed in 1929 when ELTO was merged with Lockwood-Ash Motor Company.

Mercury Marine began when engineer Carl Kiekhaefer purchased a small outboard motor company in Cedarburg, Wisconsin in 1939.

The 2 have always been fierce competitors, until the Japanese came in and messed the whole industry, and the world economy for that matter, up.

That sounds a bit better, and interesting info to boot.
