if your fourstroke is has carburetors i think you can order 60hp carbs and put them on. you may also need to get the 60hp ecm. i am not 100%. if you can find a spec sheat for your motor you need to check your bore and stroke size compared to a 60 and make sure its the same. as far as a restrictor plate i have never heard of one on an outboard unless they are refering to something different. maybe someone with more experiance with this will reply. also merc came out with a service bulliten for 40 50 and 60s if you havent done so already (and yours may not fall into the serial number range) but you need to check you powerheard bolt torque. 20ftlbs first torque then 90 degree turn second torque. if they arent torqued properly you will get water in your oil.

There is a 40 HP carbureted engine as well as 40/50/60 EFI. The 40 HP carbed engine is not the same block as the other three. In fact it is 797 cc vs 995 cc for the EFI engines. No way to make that a 60 HP. If you do have the 40 EFI, then a reprogrammed ECU, and possibly injectors and other stuff are involved and you don't want to know how much that costs.

The 2001-2010 40/50/60hp 4 cylinder carb & EFI are same block(60.8cid) and head, only differences are jetting and isolator plate for carb engines and the ECM modules for the EFI models

Agree. OP you can get a 40 to make 60hp but it takes some work and is hardly worth it in the end for an engine as old as yours. Unless you just want to do it to see if you can there's really not a lot of sense to it. You'd be suprised how deep into your pockets what you think is a simple upgrade can go. My advice to you is to live with a good running 40 and start saving and watching the adds for a newer 60.

4 strokes have a lot more moving parts and when you raise the hp on an older 4 stroke you can cause what was acceptable normal wear and tear to become unacceptable and you'll end up with a crappy running 60 hp motor.

I didn't say they did! I said there is a 40 HP carbed version available. It is a 747 cc block. The 40/50/60 EFI's are 995 cc.

I quote from the 2005 Merc Brochure which I have in my formerly nicotine stained fingers: I must defer to whatever the 2000 literature says but I don't happen to have that at hand. But based on the following, whether or not the upgrade is possible depends on what the OP actually has. 40/50/60 in the two-stroke shared the same block but he definitely has a four-stroke and at least in 2005 there were no carbed 50/60's.

40 - 4-stroke carbed & EFI = 747 cc ( (2.56 x 2.95 B&S) THREE CYLINDERS (No 50/60 HP listing for this block)

40/50/60 4-stroke EFI Big Foot = 995 (2.56 x 2.95 B&S) FOUR CYLINDERS
