I have a 1996 6 horse Johnson J6RLEDD.
The pull cord does not retract immediately. It takes quite a while.
I was told that taking it off and cleaning should best be left for someone
who really knows what they are doing. Any help/suggestions?

A pull starter is not rocket science. If you feel up to the task, I'd say go for it. If you follow the link below you can get a parts diagram that will give you an idea of what you're up against. Also, getting a service manual isn't a bad idea.

The biggest problem is letting the spring get away from you and uncoil. Be careful when taking it apart as there is stored rotational energy in the spring. I would go the WD-40 route first myself. It helps in a large percentage of problems. The parts get gummed up with oil and dirt.

I finally got around to trying the WD-40.
Looks like it is working great.
Thanks.
