Can I Swap Carbs?

I've got an '86 Evinrude 140. One of my carbs has a crack in it (where the bolt goes through to the throttle body). Overtightened it I guess (oops!). Additionally all the tubes from the float bowls to the main body seem to be disintigrating. I've read in other posts this isn't uncommon and that getting replacement tubes is next to impossible.

That being said, I've tracked down a decent set of carbs from an '89 Johnson 140. The part numbers are different than from my '86, but I'm wondering if they would fit/work on my motor. Does anyone know what changed from '86 to '89 and whether or not these changes would significantly affect performance? Would the carb bodies from the '89 even fit on my '86 throttle body?

As always, thanks for the input.

Cheers,

Brew

Ask your dealer to contact the factory thru the Dealer Support Hotline and see if high speed tubes are still available thru them. They were never available thru the regular parts department. Some carb bodies can be ordered thru the parts department.

In 1988, all the looper motors increased their bores for a larger displacement. Your '89 carbs may have a completely different calibration and bore size.

The carbs from the 89 will work fine as long as you use the throttle bodies that come with them. IE -- change the complete carb and throttle body as an assembly. Just remember to use the jetting from the 89 not the 86. Always use the airbox and cover.

As Seahorse mentioned the emulsion tubes may be available. There are at least 3 different ones so you will have to have all the numbers off the 86 carb bodies to get the right ones when your dealer calls Bombardier.

Good luck!
