Can move outdrive up and down by hand

I have a 1971 mercruiser and can move the outdrive up and down by hand. I would like to know where to start with this so that I dont do a bunch of unneccessary work. Please help!!!

How's the trim pump fluid level?

You're out of hydraulic trim fluid, trim pump is toast, trim cylinders are toast.

It's a pretty simple system. It's one or more of the above three.

Trim fluid is full, no cylinders present it is more of a gear drive type of tilt system. I have attached pictures.

You said merc....pics are OMC

Omc harder to fix

Horst - just confirming. If the pictures are the drive you have, that is not a Merc. It is an OMC drive. Very, very different.

OMC not mercruiser that would be why I cant find a picture of it in my manual... I am such a noob... Thanks guys I will get a new manual and trudge on...

Ayuh,... Search OMC Stringer drive....
