My neighbor called tonight. He's a hospice nurse and was at a clients house about 20 - 25 minutes from me. He locked his keys in his car and the local PD wouldn't help (he just bought the car used and he hasn't had an extra set of keys made yet). He knows I'm a police officer and wanted to ask what he should do. I told him that I have a lock-out kit at the police department. I would run up, grab it, and come unlock his car. Got the car unlocked and headed home. About a mile from my house (same exact place I hit a deer 2 years ago) a BIG racoon ran out in front of me. I've hit small animals before and wasn't real concerned. Thought I'ld drive the mile to the house and see if there was any damage. Then I heard part of my car fall off!

Wow.... how fast were you going? What kind of car? How far did you swerve to hit the little guy? Is the raccoon okay?

I know, it's crazy! It's a 2004 Honda Accord, I was going 50 - 55, and no, "big" guy didn't make it!

Yep, I can believe a racoon did that damage. It's not that bad, actually. The bumper cover is just a molded piece of plastic, after all. The real "strength" to your bumper is the reinforcement bar, which is the black piece of metal you see below the inside corner of your headlamp. They don't come all the way to the corner, so it doesn't take much to tear a bumper cover and have it fall/rip itself off.

Trash fed 'coons can get pretty chunky! I've seen them approaching 50#.

Don't be a hater, Kyle. Your statement is not factual at all. ALL cars are built the same. The damage to my Impala would have been the same. Same for a Volvo, same for a Toyota, same for a Volkswagen. Actually even similiar damage to a Trailblazer, or GMC Denali. Anything with a plastic bumper cover is suseptible to that type of damage. Even a truck with a chrome front bumper would still have had its lower air deflector torn off.

x2. I'm a domestic guy too. Hence why I plan on keeping my Jeep, and replacing the rusted fender, rocker panel, and floors.

(but I know Honda and Toyota make good engines... heard some bad about the automatics in the Honda minivan and "truck" (I think it has a lot of common minivan guts) as they use the 3.something v6 from the Accord and don't have enough provisions for cooling in the heavier vehicles so they tend to run hot and die sooner).

I can believe it. My wife hit a coon a few years ago with her 3000GT. I can't remember the exact figure, but it was around $2500 to fix it, and it looked worse than the Honda pictured. She said she was going 55-60 when she hit it... I was actually surprised her air bags didn't blow.

I'll keep you guys updated, but the insurance company called today and the body shop is picking it up tomorrow! I haven't always done things the right way, but I was just trying to help a friend out. Hopefully it's not too ridiculous!

I'm curious........How much is a bumper cover, including the paint job? Some jerk in a parking lot backed into my wife's "new" Toyota and boogered up her bumper cover--of course the person took off without leaving their name, etc.
What you guys need up there is a really nice bluetick coonhound to help thin those coons out! I just happen to have a "Grand night champion" at my house!
