Re: Can you ID this FISH?

I think it could be a Blenny. My wife has a saltwater aquarium so I have seen other varieties of these in stores but never that color. According to this website ( http://www.sfdj.com/adventure/macro.html ), the Blenny shown in the picture was observed by divers in the "South Jetty on the Island of Palm Beach". They lie on the ocean floor and scoop up sand, hence the "flippers" below the gills. It is one strange looking fish! :)

That's definatly a Blenny, we had one in a saltwater tank in a Marine Biology class I took. Pretty rare to catch on a hook though, we caught ours dredging off the coast of VA in the Chesapeake.

That does not look anything like the fish posted. Here are a couple more pics with different angles.

The Body is different, the side fins are also different, the tail fin is different....no way thats it.

Don't know, but I do know it's not something I'd put my hands till I can get it identified. (Maybe poisonous fins, one never knows)

I strongly disagree with any of the posted names thus far.
I have only found one name for that particular species..

you must have been near rocks!! when i was little everyone called them rock fish, due to where we caught them. normally they are the little sh!^s that steal your bait when your snook fishing.

Re: Can you ID this FISH?

I don't know much about Florida fish (Florida seems like such a unique area of convergence). I grew up on the Pacific coast and that fish looks exactly like a kelp greenling (kelp fish). These tiny fish resemble ling cod and cabezon. Again, I don't know if this fish is capable of a range that extends to Florida but I have caught these guys while surf fishing on both sides of Mexico (Pacific and Yucatan P.). Look at a drawing of a kelp fish.

Best,

Re: Can you ID this FISH?

so the proper name for those fish is a blenny??

hell, we always called them dogfish. catch a bunch of them when fishing for sheephead in the rocks by the local DNR station. We'd just chuck em into the rock sea walls so they wouldnt steal our bait anymore...
