Hello Everyone,

I picked up a Johnson 20hp Seahorse with a seized powerhead (I think), but need to identify the model and year before parting it out (to pay for a boat rebuild). The trouble is, it is a frankenmotor.

The Cowling says Johnson 20hp Seahorse. The nickle sized silver plate has a serial number C0011722. The transom mounting bracket is an Evinrude bracket with model number 35952A, with a serial number 07059296.

I have been able to identify the transom bracket as coming from a '79 25hp Evinrude. I have tried looking up the serial number and matching it to a Johnson serial number, but without any luck. Can you help me identify the powerhead? From the finishing on the motor, the only 'new' part is the transom bracket.

Thanks KirkSpock - the transom bracket is definitely a 1979 35 hp Evinrude Bracket. It's identifying the year of the rest of the motor that I'm having real trouble with (that's the picture of the nickle sized silver plate). Can anyone help with that?

Call BRP customer service at 1-262-884-5993 with that core plug #. They may be able to help.

I'm going to try the manufacturer next week, but in the meanwhile, here is a picture of the cowling. Can anyone help me identify the year of the motor?

the color and shape matches my 1976 40hp johnson. also the color of the powerhead is the same. if you look at some old threads they do exist but they dont show up on any parts lists.

Re: Can you Identify this Frankenmotor - Johnson Evinrude?

Thanks for the help everyone - so this was an interesting answer. I contacted BRP (the manufacturer of Evinrude and Johnson) - and they sent me a reply back quite quickly, indicating this was a 1976, based on the cowling. The problem was that the websites listing parts didn't list a 20hp as having been built in 1976. I contacted them back, and they indicated that the 20hp Johnson I had was built in Canada for the Non-U.S. market - and sent me the parts book I needed.

Talk about great customer service - still providing information on a product they made 37 years ago!

The 1975-76 Johnnyrude 20s built for the Canadian market had built in 20 amp a/c charging for running powertools. If it is still there there would be a rubber plug cover on the leg or pan for the outlet. I can't remember exactly since I saw it at a dealer new in 1975. Because of the Canada-only availability (may have also been offered in Europe at that time), the U.S.-based BRP website won't ever show the 20s from those years (and later). The 20 Johnson & 18 Evinrude were last offered in the U.S. for 1973, although the 20s may have come back many years later on a different generation.

I actually have a factory parts manual for a 1974 Canadian 20. I didn't know the 20 was offered that year even though I had been to numerous dealers back in 1974.

The style of the graphic design on your hood is definitely 1976. I have a 1976 15 with the same decal scheme.

Thanks - yes it does - and it has the a/c adaptor.
