Canada scraps Gun Registry

Well good news from Canada.<br />Today Prime Minister Stephen Harper set in motion<br />the steps necessary to end Canada's gun registry.<br />The decision to scrap the multi billion dollar<br />registry is great news for all law abiding citizens.<br />Not a single firearm was registered during the 10<br />year period by any criminals. <br />The crack down on criminals who use firearms in<br />offenses is being set in motion. Already Liberal<br />supporters are worried some people will be at a<br />higher risk in jails, and be more inclined to join gangs.

A victory for honest Canadians. Kind of surprised as the best way to fix a failed liberal policy is to throw more money at it. Money=Compassion. Just raise the taxes on cigs and booze.

Have a lot of buds up there.<br />Hang'n In<br />What part of SO Alberta do you live in?<br />It's a big place.<br />I used to live in LaCombe about 30 miles north of Red Deer.<br />Registered for the American draft three days after I turned 18 in Calgary, another great city! But LaCombe is like living on the top of the world! <br />On a winters night covered with snow you can see for forever! <br />And the Northern Lights! It was almost like you could put your hand through the Milky Way and touch them!<br />What a wonderful place to live. <br />Glad I had the chance to do so.

You all might be surprised at this, but I think that is great news for the Canucks.<br /><br />It was a program that cost billions of dollars with little, if any tangible benefit. I have not heard of the specifics of this plan exactly, but things like handguns and assault rifles and the like are still tightly controlled.<br /><br />There are of course still criminals out there, even in Canada, that don't obey the handgun provisions, and there is no way to make a perfect law that solves all problems, but sporting rifles and shotguns are, in Canada, almost never involved in criminal activity, and spending billions of dollars controlling them is a waste of valuable resources with little if any benefit.

Well, I doubt if the tax rate will go down, but Canada has more money than the Arabs.<br /><br />Canada is the US's largest supplier of oil--much more than the Saudis, and in case you hadn't noticed, oil prices have been a bit high.

Yes PW we are a resource rich Country. Alberta<br />supplies a large portion of the oil that the U.S.<br />consumes.The tarsands in northern Alberta has <br />some of the largest reserves anywhere. They are <br />just more costly to develop and refine.<br />Link I have some very good friends that still<br />live in LaComb, Great town.<br />The new Conservative Government has promised to<br />lower the G.S.T. from 7% to 5% over the next two<br />years.<br />Some of you may have heard about Alberta's <br />prosperity checks for its citizens. Every man<br />woman and child received $400.00 tax free dollars<br />by check in Feb /06. I spent mine on a new offshore<br />motor bracket for the new Starcraft.<br /><br />Ed (What about the children?) Not sure what you<br />are referring too.?

Link, I'm in Cardston, In-Laws have a ranch near Waterton Park - starting a house there this spring. I'm a landed immigrant from USA. Came up here to help care for wife's parents.<br /><br />Traveled around as project manager - spent a year living on Bainbridge Is. Also, 4 yrs in tri-cities. Was just in Ellensburg, visited brother there, on way to and from Portland Sportsmen show - helped a relative, outfitter/guide, from BC selling moose and bear hunts. Sure miss the NW, steelhead/salmon and now large walleye.

Sorry, Bondo.<br /><br />The evidence does not support your conclusions. The US has far more firearm related homicides than any other developed country. <br /><br />The legitimate sporting rifle and shotguns in the US accounts for a very small percentage of incidents, just as in Canada.<br /><br />Handguns OTOH are involved in a much higher percentage of such incidents, which is why they will continue be intensely regulated in Canada.<br /><br />You are free to continue to argue for no limits on firearms, but the evidence certainly exists to suggest that restrictions can be an effective tool in reducing the violence.

PW2, regulation on handguns don't work either. My nephew in Calgary says at HS he can buy a handgun any day - just ask the right kids. I'm surprised at the number of crimes with handguns. Of course some say it's because it's too easy to get them in the US and bring them up here.<br /><br />Problem is the criminal element doesn't respect the laws - surprise!

Good deal Hang'n In <br />Love eastern WA. Have spent a lot of time over there.Used to have a sales route that took me all over WA, OR and parts of Idaho.<br />The first 5 or 6 times in Tri-cities I spent more time taking wrong turns and ending up in the other city just to turn around LOL<br />We travel to Deer Park just north of Spokane and south of you a couple times a year to visit friends.<br />But hey this is a Gun toten, lead throwing thread so I will end it with this.<br /><br />We are planning a trip to the pot holes this year to throw some lead at them Bass and Walleyes
