Cannot get my boat in a gear.

It ran fine for a long time on the same day that the problem occured. I stopped for about 15 min. As I headed back out at about 5mph I gave it a little more gas. The engine reved up and it seemed to be out of gear. I slowed down again and tried to get it in gear. Again I could go about 5mph. I gave it more gas and the same thing happened. Now I can't get it in a gear at all. It will grind a little but it will not engage. Like I said this happened after one stop. There was no indication beforehand. We ran her from 10mph to 45mph all day with no problems. The only thing I have tried is adjusting the shifter cable by hand in the aft end of the boat. I have never really messed with the stern drive before. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a mercruiser stern drive. I do not know the model number or anything. I'll update that later.

You will have to forgive my ignorance. I know nothing about the mechanics of a stern drive. I know that if the prop is spun out I can have it refurbed. How hard is the coupler to replace and am I better off letting someone else do it?

Does it makes sense for it to be the coupler or a spun screw even if it will not spin at all?

When I put it in gear I can not hear anything spinning. Right now it will not move at all unless I move the shifter just right. Then it will only grind a little and move minimally. I had a similar problem with my dad's tractor last year, but it was a tractor and not a boat.

Hear is the bottom line...
1.It will not go in foreward or reverse.
2.I can only get it to grind a little when I try to put it in gear.
3. I can't hear any sign that it is actually going into a gear.
4. It went from running fine to this an a matter of minutes.
5. In response to Boatin Bob, at one point it did run a little hot, but only one time and never on the river. I will definitely check it though.
Thanks Guys,

codyandamber You probablyhear the grinding noise from where you adjusted the shift cable. that will need readjusted or you will cause more problems thatn you had before you adjusted it. As far as when you say that you can only go 5 mph and when you give it gas that it revs up but won't go any faster makes me believe that you spun the hub on the propeller. Either get a new prop or have the one you got repaired then try that.
Good Luck!
Nickster

Yep, nickster is on the Right Track....
You've Either Spun the prop hub, OR stripped the engine coupler..... They Both show the same symptoms.... Props Can be rehubed.... Couplers Must be Replaced....
AND, as stated above..... Readjust the shift-cable....

One way of kind of checking if it's the coupler or ???? is to let it run for a while and see if it overheats, if it's the coupler then chances are your impeller isn't turning and your not getting much water flow.

If it is spinning and trying to kick into gear, can I assume that it is not the shifter cable. I have tried unbolting the cable and shifting it by hand, after all. Another thing, what can I listen for to give me a good indication? No spinning noise in the stern drive, to me, would indicate a probable shifter cable problem. Am I on the right track here at all?

Cody, in many cases, you will find ground up rubber in the area of the bilge where the coupler is. also you can smell the rubber. If the coupler has gone bad......good luck.......

Coupler/Shaft....Not good...Expensive...Hope it isn't that....I am inclined to think it is not the coupler, when mine went, it would not move the boat at all...Whatever it is, stop monkeying with it yourself, let the pro's figure this one out...

Re: Cannot get my boat in a gear.

Thanks for the info. I would like to refer to my original statement...You will have to forgive me for my ignorance... I am learning, though. It was not the shifter cable or the coupler. They were great recommendations. You did not have enough information about it because I couldn't get it to you. It was a spun prop. I took it off today and there was hardly any rubber left. It was going in gear. Ignorance I tell you. I will get better at the mechanical side soon. I was a mechanic at heart, the Navy made me a Tech.

Submariner for life.

That's Great..... Now you have an Excuse to buy a Neat New Prop.....
Then have that one rebuilt, for a spare....
