It ran fine for a long time on the same day that the problem occured. I stopped for about 15 min. As I headed back out at about 5mph I gave it a little more gas. The engine reved up and it seemed to be out of gear. I slowed down again and tried to get it in gear. Again I could go about 5mph. I gave it more gas and the same thing happened. Now I can't get it in a gear at all. It will grind a little but it will not engage. Like I said this happened after one stop. There was no indication beforehand. We ran her from 10mph to 45mph all day with no problems. The only thing I have tried is adjusting the shifter cable by hand in the aft end of the boat. I have never really messed with the stern drive before. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a mercruiser stern drive. I do not know the model number or anything. I'll update that later.

You will have to forgive my ignorance. I know nothing about the mechanics of a stern drive. I know that if the prop is spun out I can have it refurbed. How hard is the coupler to replace and am I better off letting someone else do it?

Does it makes sense for it to be the coupler or a spun screw even if it will not spin at all?

When I put it in gear I can not hear anything spinning. Right now it will not move at all unless I move the shifter just right. Then it will only grind a little and move minimally. I had a similar problem with my dad's tractor last year, but it was a tractor and not a boat.

Hear is the bottom line...
1.It will not go in foreward or reverse.
2.I can only get it to grind a little when I try to put it in gear.
3. I can't hear any sign that it is actually going into a gear.
4. It went from running fine to this an a matter of minutes.
5. In response to Boatin Bob, at one point it did run a little hot, but only one time and never on the river. I will definitely check it though.
Thanks Guys,
