What about raising the pontoons, so they come out of the water as the boat comes on plane? They would still make for some awesome cornering & stability at slower speeds, but are they really needed for buoyancy?

Re: Canoe in Two Finished (recent pics)

definitly needed for buoyancy at a standstill... they are raised about 2 inches higher than the bottom of the canoe.. without them and using a trolling motor, I only have about 3 inches of sideboard... not enough when other boats are using the lake. :) still looking at the options of maybe some kind of trim tabs both on the front and rear... or a foil of sorts on the front and tabs on the rear. :)

Time for a new project so I slapped some paint on it and am calling it done for now.. Will test it out with a lightweight driver one of these days and it may very well live out its life in my nephews pond :)

My wife decided tonight that with paint on it.. "its cute". Now she wants to try it out :) .. seems as though i'm going to find my lightweight trials driver sooner than I expected :D

:D hey amd I saw you visited my chat the other day.. sorry I left it on when I went out fishing.

I'm considering a new line of redneck attachments for it... cant stand the thought of it being finished already :D ... was out playing with it and the motor tonight... considering some chine type add ons to the front bottom so when I take off the nose wont dig in when I move the weight up towards the front.

I have this on the hood of my lil old truck.. thinking it would rest better on the nose of canoe..

and i'll put this on the truck in its place...

I'm thinking about a roof rack for carrying a canoe on my camper shell... with 6 chrome cleats along the top for tying it down. :)

I've been following your project for a bit now too. It's pretty dang entertaining. I think paul's right. If you could get those things out of the water some somehow after you take off, that would be nice. I would think it would become really unstable while turning if you were ever able to get it moving fast. But I can see the reasoning behind needing buoyancy. Maybe chines will help. You may have already mentioned this, but have you thought about sitting towards the stern a little more and putting gas up front? Maybe it's possible that could help you plane out. Where you are sitting, you are plowing a fairly deep vee (considering the lack of hp) through the water because of the distribution. Maybe if you got back where the stern flattens out a little? Lol, maybe with the new flotation it won't sink you with all that weight in the back. gl

Re: Canoe in Two Finished (recent pics)

I did that on my last run out... I pushed the gas can up under the seat further forward and I moved back a bit.... still to heavy... I'm wondering about some trim tabs mounted to the bottom at the back of the boat that set in flush then when I take off I could push down on them just ever so slightly to raise the back end up and out... hmmmmmmmm back end is too narrow to hang them off the back... my prop would eat them up.

I'm also considering more HP :D somewhere between 10 and 20 depending on weight.

I think the extra HP would do it for you too. :D I had an 18 hp on a 10'flat bottom boat I had when I was young. It was waayyyyyy less stable than a comparable jon boat. When I found the boat, there was about a 2 1/2 ft by 4 ft section cut out of the bottom. The guy cut it up for a sign he wanted to make. I had no idea how to repair it, but I bought a gallon of resin and some thin mat and went to work. Lmao, I didn't even add any stringers or other support. The name of the boat was coochiecraft....not kidding, that was the actual decal on 2 sides. Anyway, I had that thing in the wind that same day with the floor flexing and buckling under my feet (I'll bet it flexed up to 2-3 inches). But hey, I think I was moving so fast....the ol' coochie was scared to break apart. Maybe the "cantwo" will respect you the same way (or maybe you could call it "trinoe"). :p

That is a great story... I love it. A lil scared for ya but great nontheless. I like it when, kids especially, get out and repair or create things like that... shows creativity and thought and the need to have fun :D (no matter how dangerous it may be)

Anyone who's messed with small outboards know if there's much diff in weight in the 10 to 20 hp range motors?

Re: Canoe in Two Finished (recent pics)

I think it depends on the year. For example a 10hp Evinrude from 1975 weighs 76lbs, while the 25hp of the same year weighs 87lbs. Contrast that with 1987. The 10hp still weighs 76lbs, but the 20hp (not the 25) weighs more than the 1975 25hp, weighing in at 120lbs.

I think 6 or 7.5 hp would be the top end of what you want to try, unless you have a salvage crew standing by. The weight of a higher hp motor, the pilot and accessories will probably swamp it pretty fast at speed. No use dunking a good motor just to see it floats and planes?

Re: Canoe in Two Finished (recent pics)

:D If the higher hp motors were lighter i'd be happy to slap one on but under the circumstances I dont have a choice :) ... guess i'll stick with my 4 hp... not going to spend a load of money to gain 1 or 2 hp either.

I have looked at this whole thread and I think your all nuts or drinking the wrong beverages. :D

Anyway I think the issue is a canoe is not a planing hull it is a semi-displacement hull. With enough power anything will plane! With enough weight it will also sink. :(

It looks cool but I think you need to build a little boat made for the 4-25 hp motors your really wanting.

I am thinking of a project for the kids.

Re: Canoe in Two Finished (recent pics)

:D I love it.. I'm one more trials cruise away from slipping this into my Sisters pond and leave it for the nephews to paddle it around... If I can get a lightweight test captian to try it out and it works good with this motor with the lighter weight I may keep going and slap a steering and throttle assy on it so they can face forward and drive it. :)

Here is my next projects.... First I am picking this up in themiddle of OCT to restore and use. I'm hauling it from WA state to TN. (I've never really been right in the head can ya tell? :D ) I just like the hull design so much and from what I'm told its in decent shape. Oh and the price is right.. :)

Picture014.jpg

Then I'm looking to build a half size version of this... I'll power it with gas and let the wheel trail so it looks like its paddle driven...

I'm kinda in between on building a mini tug or this showboat. :)
Didn't we see pics of that vintage boat, along with a smaller 2-seater boat recently? From another iboat member...or was that you?

{edit}...oops, I see that WAS you. Topic: Worthwhile project?

fun fun fun yep it was me... I'm thinking rounded captains chairs... a bench across the back... a ships wheel some new paint and carpet and a whole lot of elbow grease... after I repair whatever ails it.

Then possibly an upgrade to a newer 110 or 115 hp :)

Love that Show boat... would'nt mind knowin where the plans came from..... I see the possibilities comming together already... wonder what my neighbors would think if I started to build that in the drive...lol

Forget the outboard.... I'd mount an old car engine in the back and let it turn the paddle... work out the cooling system in it to keep her cool....hmmmmmmm...
