Is this a common occurance? Drive probably has about 20 hours on it. Anyone know if this is a possible DIY project or is disassembly required?photo (3).jpg

Nope,... Not common at all,... that says it had Water in it....

If it's that New, it's still under warranty, call SEI....

Btw,... If that's the Only issue, it's a Non-issue anyways, the cage don't care...
But ya still gotta explain the Water...

No it's not common, where is the water getting in? Water in bellows?
Sounds like a pressure and vacuum check is in your future to find the leak.
It may be under warranty, but if you are doing something wrong or missing something, it's going to keep happening.

What prompted you to pull the cap off? Was the drive (bearing?) abnormally noisy?

Don, this has been progressively getting a little worse over the last couple of years, after the first season I pulled the cap to check the oil level and for a general inspection, started out as a very small rust spot on the cage and over the last couple seasons has progressed to this. Changed the impeller last year and no water was in the bellows and they are still in good shape. No streaking in the drive oil or water noticed either when I changed before last season. The drive was bought in 09. I do live in a climate that reaches the 20's in the winter time and can be as warm as 120 in the summer with 40 degree temperature variations between night and day. Any chance of condensation?

Pulled the cap for a general inspection after the first season when I was changing the drive oil and noticed a very small rust spot on the cage. Ran fine last season( two seasons later) no abnormal noise. (In response to: "What prompted you to pull the cap off? Was the drive (bearing?) abnormally noisy?")

And yes I replaced the O ring and torqued the cap to spec after pulling it. :joyous:

A little surface rust on the cage of a bearing will not hurt the bearing itself, nor will it effect how the drive operates.
Why did you pull the cap to change the oil, that's not necessary at all? You do put a new seal ring on the cap each time don't you.

Just to clarify, "the cage don't care" Meaning you wouldn't sweat the rust on the cage? I would assume most of the load is on the bearings and the race, just makes me nervous. If it lets go I know what happens, that's the reason it has an SE on it. The last drive let go due to the same bearing failing. This is what leads me to believe it may be climate or condensation related.

Yes I replace the o ring after looking(o rings are cheap!), I have a habit of continuing to look every season when I change the drive oil because of what I saw the first time around with the small rust spot. Before it comes up, yes I pump from the bottom up and properly fill the drive when I'm servicing it, which is usually necessary only once a year as you can see by the hours and how long I've owned it.
