Hey Dezi good to hear an update.
if you’re doing multiple coats try out the roll n roll
went down super smooth for me.
its basically wet roller to apply and dry roller to smooth

Help please...... So we got the first coat of paint on a couple days ago. I know I need to wet sand with 400grit paper. How much am I sanding ? How much pressure? I think our first coat was a little heavy as there is some orange peel. If I sand too much I’m taking paint off to primer again. Am I supposed to be lightly sanding only? Do I go aggressively and make it really flat? Please guys give me some advice. I want to get back out and have it ready for the second coat soon. Thanks all ;)

The more coats you do the better. It will give you layer build up and as long as you have a reasonable base and good adhesion I don’t think how much you leave truly matters.
i went over it with a random orbital sander until I saw full contact (no un sanded low spots) .
by the sounds of it you already have it nice and flat so I would not worry too much about anything beyond flat and even.
I know it’s different from what I did (being a flat panel/ transom only) but think about adhesion more than anything else at this stage

Pics to come. Figured it out. Orange peel from probably to heavy of a first coat and also to hot out. Direct sunlight didn’t help.
Been wet sanding with 400 grit paper for the last 3 days. Half way there. Then just have to wait for a cool shady day since I have to do it outside. Will post pics once it’s all sanded.

Well it seems like today was a waste of time and money :( I had finished wet sanding everything really well. Washed the hull then wiped with acetone. This morning we put on a first coat of paint. Roll and roll method. It went down nice and flat. About 1/2 hour later we put a second coat on. ORANGE PEEL everywhere! I am so mad and disappointed right now and have no idea what to do. Do I scuff it up tomorrow and put on another couple
coats? Then try to sand and buff out the orange peel? Do I just say f@&$ it and move on? At a complete loss and could really use some help please

What you do is this. Relax and forget it for however long you need. Then block sand it out, Try again. Once you got a base coat down and smooth. My self I would spray it on. But give her another run whichever method you choose.

I just nighmare on elm streeted a quarter panel the other day. It happens to the best of them. Main thing is just dont panic. you will get it.

So here are some photos for you guys to take a look at and hope tell me what to do....

This is all wet sanded and pulled into the garage so I was out of direct sunlight. Also it was much cooler in there in the morning. Also I wiped it all down with acetone to make sure it was good and clean

Then first coat of WOG's formula followed to a T.

Did the thumb test and it was ready for a second coat. Again same procedures like the first.

Very upset about this. I don't know what we did wrong. Also I don't know what to do to fix it. I really don't want to sand it all down again. But if I have to? Or do I scuff and apply 2 more coats (5 in total then). Let it cure for a good week then wet sand and buff? Never done that before... Please everyone, I sure hope you guys can help me out.

Thanks,

Dezi

It looked good till that coat. Like i said just sand it smooth with a block and do one more coat. It looks to me like it was setting up already(hardening). And that was the last coats issue. it was past the window for doing another coat already.

Ok so I will sand again. Should I be going to 800 or 1000? When I did the last wet sanding I just used sponges under the paper as I don’t really have a lot of flat spots. The sponges helped along all the contours. Also I am supposed to stay away from edges right?

OK, a few questions. What was the temp at time of the last coat? What reducer did you use and what Percentage. With this much orange peel I'd be a bet more aggressive and start with water with some dishsoap added and sand with 220. I would NOT go past 400 grit. You want to have some BITE in the paint surface. In the summer I'd for sure recommend using a 60% MS and 40% Acetone reducer and I'd use about 20 25% reducer. You want a thin coat that takes a bit longer to flash. This allows it to settle and smooth out. Try to avoid High Humidity as well.

It was cool out. Around 21. In my garage as well. I did use straight MS. No acetone. 1/8 of a cup of hardener. We did do 2 coats. Second one was put on when first coat was still tacky. So far there is 3 coats of paint on there. I have almost all of the orange peel sanded out using 400 and 800 grit wet. Should I still be ok if I have sanded with 800? I was going to also use 1000 grit for final sand but if you suggest against it, I'm
good with that ;). So to my understanding. 16ozs of paint, 2ozs of ms/acetone mix and 1 oz of hardener correct? Using hi density foam rollers.

Thanks for the the help and advice. Hope to try round 3 tomorrow.

Ok so a full day of wet sanding with 400 then 800 paper. Man is my back sore. Tomorrow I will figure out a way to wash the hull in the garage without making a mess. Then a wipe down with acetone and one more coat of paint. I think there is enough there as I didn’t go through the colour anywhere. Sound fair?

Hoping for the best as you walk that fine line between orange peel and sagging.
