Ordered a box of 36 grit discs and backer pad and a angle grinder from amazon. No Harbor Freight here in Ontario Canada.. I wish there was. . Go there every time we cross the boarder... Great deals..I guess our Princess Auto would be close... Since I work so much during the week, I just have Amazon deliver my stuff there :)

If the cap's on no worries. Use a 3x3 ft piece of 3/4" plywood to kneel on and you'll be fine. Remember IF you can smell a strong odor of the distinct smell of fiberglass...Your respirator is NOT working.

if you have facial hair shave, you should not be able to ever put a foot through floor of boat it will flex a bit but shouldnt fall through.

now is time to start grinding......and when you think your done grinding......grind more.

if you have a shop vac brand shop vac. then get their filter bag. seriously, get the filter bag

then when your grinding, put the end of the shop vac hose right where the stuff is coming off the disc. it will keep the dust to a minimum.

as WOG stated, if you can smell fiberglass, your PPE is not adequate. Micky has a good point on facial hair.

life is too short to die of fiberglass in the lungs.

I used a lot of 24 grit. I also use a lot of 4.5" carbide saw blades in the angle grinder as well as they shave more than grind. however they also dull fairly quick.

I hope to start and grind a couple hours a night this week and then a full day this weekend.. See what happens...

The dust is gonna fly!!!!

With the elaborate supports you've already built, I wouldn't worry about flex. Would be wise to lay down a board inside as was suggested, though, to help distribute your weight a bit. You can move it around as needed.

Definitely see a lot of grinding in your future. Necessary evil.

A lot of grinding won’t be too bad. Split
it up over a couple of weeks and that way I won’t get too bored. I have to ask. What is the reasoning to grind soo much off? Is it
still an investigative stage as well? I will grind the whole hull no problem there. Just wanted to know why? I understand to make sure you have a clean area to allow the new glass to bond to. Just an example. I grind the gel coat in the bilge area off and the glass is clean under it..... I keep going until there is no ridge left and it’s nice and flat and smooth?

Thanks

And then you grind some more. I usuall go another layer of cloth past that point (watch the pattern)

i just grind to solid material if its solid im not going to grind for nothing, the object is to get rid of bad layups and make the hull smooth to put new stringers down, that said i left slight ridges when i did mine and used them to line up stringers back where they came from, but if its bad layup as in fibers are dry grind it off or if you find areas that are really thick with resin and very little chop or anything, grind it off its doing nothing .

Sounds good.. I will be hoping to start this week. I will take what pics I can of the progress.

Thanks.

Still toying around the idea of a center console... Will see where that leads after I get the floor down and a nice new area to do whatever I want when I start to put things back. This will be a all new interior layout.. I think the only thing that will stay the same is the dog house area..

Are you going for a fishing boat config? If so, might wanna reference some of the custom work done on some of the so-called mid to high end cc bay boats - by the builders themselves, as well by owners after-the-fact.

I may not ever try my hand at epoxy injecting, or fixate about the degree of deadrise for dealing with rough water, but there is a fair amount of useful insight to be be gained from some of those builds.

you will need 3 chases one for battery/electrical
1 for steering
1 for controls
i would use 2" flex pvc for chase and go from center to starboard corner rear that way your steering would be at right spot to come around to hit the transom as well as shift controls then you need to figure out steering control thats small enough to fit inside console
easy project really if you are already doing floor :)

Sounds Good!! Thanks for the advice.. I will work that in to my layout. I have been looking around at steering packages. Not rack and pinion I guess. Rotary?? What am I looking for when it comes to a kit?

can be either rack and pinion or rotary. if rack, the rack sits in at an angle

Well a very productive day today:) got suited up and ground away from 9-5. A very looooong day but well worth it. Got transom done, bilge area all ground. BTW I hate gelcoat. Took it all done. Got the left over of the deck on the back removed, ground out the bilge pump mount and started to work my way down the gags tank area. About 30% of the stringer areas are ground. An 8 hour day was enough for me. I am pooped and tired. Don’t worry..... Taking photos as I go. Will post some maybe tomorrow. Need to clean up the hull so you all can see what I actually have done. So one question. I see there is wood strips set in where the chines are? It is dry and buried under glass for the most of it. Can I leave them alone? My plan is once I smooth things out I want to roll on a coat eeeepoxy resin then use some PB to fair/feather things out. Then maybe one layer of 6oz cloth just to make sure everything is sealed up good before I set my stringers and bulkheads in. Is this ok? Please let me know.

Think it’s beer time and relax.

Thanks all
