Getting to to point of my boat restoration where I need to start thinking about painting the cap and some stripes on the side of my 17' '78 Invader. I would like to match the truck that is going to be hauling it (Silver '08 Chevy 2500) and paint the cap the same color as the truck and have some black and silver stripes running down the side. Anyway my question is can I paint the cap with an automotive primer and base coat then go over it with a clear gel coat? My main concerns are adhesion and wrinkling of the paint.

Thanks, Ranger

I skimmed through the thread WOG attached but I didn't see where they discussed using clear gel coat over automotive paint. Like I said, I only lightly skimmed it.

There is a 95% chance the clear gel coat will destroy the auto paint, there are only a couple of paints that will hold up to the styrene in gel coat and not lift and wrinkle.

Re: Car base coat and clear Gelcoat?

this ^^^ is Correct and MY BAD. Archbuilder used Automotive Paint with Automotive Clear Coat. NOT Clear Gelcoat. I agree with ondarvr that using Clear Gelcoat would prolly destroy the paint for the reasons stated.

My BAD...Sorry:facepalm:

Ayuh,.... If ya plan on Sprayin',.... There's Better paints than the Base/ Clears to use....

Ask yer Supplier 'bout the 2-pt, urethanes he's sellin'.... High Quality Fleet Paints....
