Carb 350 different idle speeds

I've got a '96 Mercruiser 350 with an edelbrock 1409. I'm not sure how long ago the carb was rebuilt, but it's rusty and missing the choke coil. It starts right up and runs good. It's fed by a sierra electric fuel pump. The problem is the idle speed is all over the map. When warmed up it sometimes idles at 750, 1000, 1200. There's really no rhyme or reason to it. After I started when cold it idles about 1000, which is what I prefer. The problem with the erratic idle is when I'm docking etc. I need it to stay more consistent.

The other engine I just had rebuilt and I put a new 1409 on it, it had the automotive carb on it(1406?). I hooked the choke up. It runs very very well. I haven't messed with the idle mixture at all, just set the idle speed.

Do you think the other carb needs rebuilt? Would that cause erratic idle?

Gotta another problem with the sierra fuel pump. It'll eventually stop pumping, like it's clogged. I've changed the filter, blew out all the lines, dis-assembled the pump. I'll just be running along and the engine will surge a little and usually die if I let it. It'll generally stay running at idle. Today it did it again and I smacked the pump with a wrench and it started acting fine. I only mention it in case it's connected to the idle issue.

You want the idle down around 650. Make sure that with the throttle at idle it pushes back a little on the carb to close it all the way down to where it should be.

I aim for 650 in gear and 1000 in neutral, or somewhere around there. The flybridge throttles may be giving me problems... maybe I should dis-connect them and see what happens.

you should be 700 in neutral and 600 in gear. anything higher than that will take out the dog clutches in your alpha drive

check your throttle cables for binding

I have velvet drives..
I'll check for binding cables. I also need to find the purple/white wire on the thunderbolt ignition so I can properly set idle, couldn't find it in the past on the other engine. It doesn't help that the tachs and sync gauge don't ever agree with each other. I use a digital multi meter with rpm setting when adjusting the idle. Getting the idle turned down will help with my no wake speed... right now I'm blasting through the marina with both in idle and fwd. My props could be too coarse too, I forgot to get the size before putting the boat in the water(it's 30', no trailer).
