I've got a '96 Mercruiser 350 with an edelbrock 1409. I'm not sure how long ago the carb was rebuilt, but it's rusty and missing the choke coil. It starts right up and runs good. It's fed by a sierra electric fuel pump. The problem is the idle speed is all over the map. When warmed up it sometimes idles at 750, 1000, 1200. There's really no rhyme or reason to it. After I started when cold it idles about 1000, which is what I prefer. The problem with the erratic idle is when I'm docking etc. I need it to stay more consistent.
The other engine I just had rebuilt and I put a new 1409 on it, it had the automotive carb on it(1406?). I hooked the choke up. It runs very very well. I haven't messed with the idle mixture at all, just set the idle speed.
Do you think the other carb needs rebuilt? Would that cause erratic idle?
Gotta another problem with the sierra fuel pump. It'll eventually stop pumping, like it's clogged. I've changed the filter, blew out all the lines, dis-assembled the pump. I'll just be running along and the engine will surge a little and usually die if I let it. It'll generally stay running at idle. Today it did it again and I smacked the pump with a wrench and it started acting fine. I only mention it in case it's connected to the idle issue.
