Gentlemen, I've read the carb adjustment thread in the FAQ forum, but have a few minor questions.
First, when I was adjusting the low speed needles on my carbs, my motor's RPMs increased alot. I know this is normal during adjustment, but I was concerned about the "runaway" possibility. Is it possible to suffer this if the shifter is in neutral?
If not, then I guess I'm fine to continue adjusting. If so, then I'll need to wait till I'm on the water to adjust them.

Also, is it necessary to adjust the high speed jets on my engine? From looking through the manual, it makes no mention of the need to adjust them.

Thanks guys!!

BTW jtexas, the carb leak was due to the inlet needle being stuck. I don't know why, but there was a bit of corrosion on it, and on other things in the bowl. I don't understand why, because I had just rebuilt it and it wasn't there. In any case, I recleaned the whole thing and paid special attention to the inlet needle. Now, no leaking and all seams to be fine, less the adjusting, of course.

your adjustments should be in the water, any way, as on muffs you don't have exhaust backpressure. as it starts to rev up throttle back. my 71 50hp manual says start at 5/8ths turn out from gently seated. and that was really close to perfect. i believe highspeed are fixed jets, no adjusting.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like I've got a good reason to head for the lake this week...:D

I have seen some flushers that have an exhaust backpressure fitting, that looks like it is supposed to simulate the backpressure of a submerged prop. Do these work as stated, or are they more of a gadget that could end up costing alot in the long run?

This is what I'm talking about:

(From the site)
A must for all outboards, Flush Muffler creates the proper back pressure to ensure that your outboard cooling system is completely and properly flushed. Flush Muffler also silences your outboard, so neighbors are not disturbed. Meets noise ordinances and OSHA requirements for noise pollution. Works on outboards 50 hp and up.

to be honest i've never heard of it. you sure wouldn't want to use it doing a decarb. go to the lake and know it's right.
