well i was cleaning the stromberg carbs on my AQ130A volvo and i broke the arm that holds the floats to the carb(the ones that are attached to the inside of the carb body my question is

is there a way of getting them stuck back on with metal weld or solder or would it be easier to source another carb?????

if you broke something integral to the carb... then get a new carb.

Find the manual for the carb you own find the name of the part and the part# and see if you can't get a replacement part. Try that before you go and buy a new carb.

Capt is right. If I understand this posting correctly, he broke part of the carb casting that holds the pin for the float. In which case Capt is correct. You may want to make sure you know what you are talking about before you start calling someone nuts!!!

While I may not agree with everything Capt says, he does have alot of experience and expertise with boats, probably more than yourself.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Awww thanks RobJ... your gonna make me blush...
I'm not as good as Don S, or Bondo or Rodbolt..... (and i'm not as old either!! jab jab!) But i've been around a little bit. I'm a good middle man!

Carbs are expensive.....
Boating is ridiculous......
But being broken down 5 miles off shore is priceless :)

I'd bet a dollar that he could JB Weld the part back on and it would stick....
But I'd bet 2 dollars that the float would stick all the time.....

CCMarsh... Not every carb can be rebuilt. Throttle valve shaft seals wear out and are not serviceable.
If somebody brought me an original carb off of a 71 anything... i wouldn't even open it up... i'd punt it.
If you have an idle that just won't come down, if you have an engine that spits and pops.... and if you have a motor that is mysteriously burning valves.... the last thing you want to do is "rebuild" a 37 year old carb.

That was a joke, hence the little icon I put next to it.

If you have ever read any of my threads then you would already know that Capt has more expertise than me and I never tried to make an impression that he didn't. Capt has helped me out trememdously already and I am greatly appreciative. If anything I say bothers Capt I'm sure he'll let me know.

Sorry Capt.

Re: carb float holder

No problem guys.

I have broken the part renny1 is talking about, but on an outboard. Those ears are part of the casting that hold the pin that the float hinges on. I ended up buying a new carb, because it could not be repaired. You should be able to find a used carb for much less than a new one. That IMO is your best choice.

Re: carb float holder

I would probably put a rebuild kit in them. That way you know they are ready to go. BTW watch the ears for the float pins. lol. Been there, done that.

Re: carb float holder

pull the jets out of the old carbs and the new carbs and look at the numbers to make sure they are the same size... if they are not, or if you can't tell, put your old jets (clean obviously) into the new carb.
