I am trading my pool table for a '85 glasstream b/r. It has a mercruiser 165 i/o and I was told that it needs a new carburetor.

The guy told me that his mechanic said the least expensive way to fix it would be to get a carb from a junk yard and that any ford or mercury carb would work. Additionally, he said a standard auto battery would work fine for the engine.

He also said that it is salt or fresh water compatible. I assume that this means it is a closed system.

Any knowledge about this would be welcomed.

service manual says it came with either a mercarb 2bbl or a rochester 4bbl. these would be marnie carbs.... not something off a car. do not shop for car parts for your boat. parts for cars are not parts for boats....

go here http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=251571

looks like ya need #8 for yer engine. confirm by s/n..... probably 6 for the drive....

once again. don't put car parts on your boat. parts for boats must be uscg approved....

Ayuh,.....

You're getting the Very Short end of the stick with this Trade....

That motor is the Infamous Merc 470......(do a search)

It's the Worst blunder than Mercruiser has Ever pulled off.....
They wised up,+ quit production just a few years after they started....

If you want to be a Boater,.... Wait it out,+ find a boat powered by a Chevy motor,+ either a Merc. or Volvo drive.....

If you just want to exprience Total Frustration,+ draining your Checkbook,(if the parts can be found at All)...

Go for it....

Keep the pool table and tell him to find another sucker.

Even if your pool table needs new felt, bumpers, and missing 4 of the pockets it is worth more than that old hulk with the disaster known as the Mercruiser 470.

I'll bet he left out some other tidbits about the boat, like the transom and strigers are rotten (pretty common on a boat that is just shy of a quarter century old).

As for using a car carb on a boat.....as Ziggy said: DON'T

A car carb is not safe, legal, or suited for use on any boat.

Tell him to throw in the truck with the deal.

Then you can sink the boat and keep the truck.

Otherwise DON'T DO IT.

Does this boat have a 4 cylinder engine, or the inline 6 165 hp engine? If it's the inline 6, what is the issues with it?

there wouldn't be any

from my recollection. the L6 was no longer used after 1981... someone else will have to substantiate my statement... i'm fairly sure it was gone by 1985 though...

I'm pretty sure it's the crappy 470.

Would have said 250 on the valve cover if it was a L6.

Thanks for clearing that up. I have read bad things about the 4 cylinder 165 as well. I wasn't sure what year the inline 6 was dropped. Now I do!:)
