Carb needle won't seat - 9.9 - 2001

I cleaned the carb and bought a carb kit but for some reason the needle isn't seating properly. Such that when I prime it the gas flows out of the overflow. I don't have a lot of experience with this stuff so is there anything a noob might do to mess this up?

Thanks

Maybe the float is sinking? Are you sure you assembled it correctly? Maybe a bad needle? Possible debris or obstruction in the seat?

Be sure you got the right carb kit. You didn't say if it were a 2 or a 4 stroke. With the float bowl of the carb removed, hold the float up so the needle is gently pressed into the seat, blow into the fuel tube. It shouldn't pass air at all. Did you get a new float in the kit? I have heard of the needle sticking closed. those carbs are quite simple. where people get in trouble is dirty and or old gas. There are very small passages that can get pluged up so drain the bowl if you don't plan on using it for a few weeks. The hex screw on the bowl, don't loose the gasket seal on the screw. Running it dry always leaves some fuel in the bowl!!!!!

P.S. The only difference between the 9.9 and the 15 is the carb. on the 4 stroke. Good Luck!!

To test sealing of the needle and seat, tip the carb upside down and blow (with your mouth -- not compressed air) into the fuel inlet. If air passes you have something wrong. Just the weight of the float is all it takes to seal the needle and seat. Forcing the float up with a finger can mask its operation.
