I picked up an old Glastron with a 90HP outboard Johnson from a co-worker. I have been able to the the motor to crank but it wont turn over. I have been told that the carbs probably need rebuilding. So far I have:

1. Replaced the spark plugs
2. Compression tested(all cylinders tested between 100-105 psi)

I have removed the carbs from the motor in an attempt to rebuild. Not sure if this is something I can do myself or I should take to the mechanic. I am mechanically inclined and do the majority of my car and motorcycle repairs myself, is this something I can tackle. If not, how much can I expect to pay a boat mechanic to rebuilt boat carbs?

Re: Carb Rebuild

It helps to know what year this engine is. Depending on the year, it could be a looper or a crossflow. They are completely different engines.

Not sure what you mean by "it will crank but won't turn over." Same thing.
Do you mean the starter cranks but can't turn over the engine?

Post the year of your motor...and the carbs are definitely a DIY with any help you need from the folks here.

Re: Carb Rebuild

You can handle a carb rebuild...nothing to it, if I can do it then you can do it and you have more mechanical experience than I do. It was fun!

Start by reading the Top Secret Files thread regarding Carb Rebuilds.

Manual here:

http://www.outboardbooks.com/

The sync./link operation is touchy. You will find the manual very informative.

1. Do a compression test first. All should be over 100 psi and within 5-10 psi of each other.

If OK, go to #2. If not, you have a lot of thinking to do.

2. Rebuild carb's.

3. Champion plugs ONLY. OMC's were partial to them.

First post gives compression #s....they were good.
