Carb Rebuilding 101

I've just rebuilt the carb on a 1979 evinrude, My rebuild kit did not include a float gauge. After looking at it upside down the floats were not exactly parallel with the carb body! If left as is what would the result be If not adjusted? And if I should take it back apart to adjust would it be wise to use the same gasket? Carb has not been remounted to the engine yet!

Hi T-290<br />The result would be incorrect fuel level in the bowl. this could cause flooding or fuel starvation. If you are careful and don't break the gaskets, you should have no problems.

Thanks Alcan, Where is the proper place on the Float to make the adjustment? I know you bend the tab but do you try to bend it in front of the needle (float end)or behind the needle? The object is to try and make the float paralell with the bowl yes? would it be wise to order the gauge card?

The object is to not necessarily make the floats "parallel with the bowl", but to set the floats at their specification. This is usually given in inches or millimeters with reference to some point on the bowl or carb body. You can measure and make your own gauge card.

My glass ball said that this was 70 HP, if so the measurement is 15/16 from the float bowl gasket surface to the top edge of the float, about 1/4 inch back from the front of the float. Float should be real close to parallel with float bowl gasket surface.<br /><br />Edited 30 April 2002 The correct measurement is 29/32 from carb body gasket surface to top of float.

Forktail, after looking back into the service manual other than the recommended float gauge, they state in the specs, that the float is to be flush with the rim of casting! <br />Clanton I apologize for not stating the size and horsepower of the motor which was only a 79 6-HP! The 70 HP should be 29/32, and the 6hp should be 25/32 from gasket surface of carb body.

I've noticed that the replacement float is made of a synthetic material as compared to the old cork. I would think that they would be made to the same manf. specs therefore measurements should still be the same ? Should the new material hold up longer than the old cork ?
