Your list of what to do, you are combining different processes. The spray bottle of goa/oil would be used to tell if your getting fuel by an old test of the give it what it needs. This would be done with an old spray bottle you tripple rinsed or preferably going to dollar store and buying a cheap spray bottle that you can put anything in. This is NOT used to clean passages. Spray carb cleaner is the product for this is, and is bought as an airisol. But i agree buy the dip can of Cleaner and let soak over night at least preferably 48 hours and then blow out with compressed air. If doing it on the boat that computer canned air duster will work or canned carb cleaner to give a flushing affect.
As to your linkages it dosent matter which end comes loose. Do whichever will dissconnect easiest. If you disconnect the bottom just remember that you will have that linkage attached to your carb the whole time.
