Re: Carbs...Idle...Timing....Am I missing something??

Would the soaking of the carbs (effectively removing the sealer) cause air leaks ????

Dhadley,

What sealer would you recommend.... RTV ???

and could these plugs not being sealed cause a air leak and increase in RPM like book is saying.... ??

Again Thanks for your patience with me ...all your expertise has been a big help...

The plugs that are exposed to air can be sealed with a gasket sealer like Adhesive M.

Any hardning type gasket sealer will work.

Yep, cant hurt although if those are leaking sealer may not stick to them with fuel/oil on them.

Re: Carbs...Idle...Timing....Am I missing something??

Well the water test went real well, except....

I can't get the idle RPM in gear down to 650 without it dying...It runs real smooth and nice around 750-800, which is where it is currently set. after i got her home i pulled the plugs #1 was almost wet and a little carboned 2 and 3 looked wet and light brown, the best i could describe it was it looked they had pancake syrup spread on them.

The motor ran fine at 5800 @ WOT with 350 lbs people 100 Lbs fuel 250 Lbs gear.. my basic load...

At Idle the engine smokes alot. and i mean more than i would expect...enough to turn heads...Now i ran 100:1 in the fuel and the VRO is functioning, this is my normal habit for the first tank of the season after that it's strait gas and VRO. But it seems to be excessive amount of smoke even for the extra oil in the fuel. I tried to see how it would react to the choke while at idle in gear...I think the response i got is what i should see...about 1 second with no affect then it dies unless i release the the choke. what do ya think......

Thanks Jeff

Dhadley,

based upon above information do you think i need to lean out cyl 1 and leave the rest alone...

also i know this post is about timing ide and carbs... but based on the figures i have attained it looks like the boat is proped right...so going from a 13 1/4 X 17 aluminum to a 13 3/4 X 17 OMC SST should be the correct choice for this setup... you seem to be a wealth of knowledge in the prop choice section form all that i've been able to read here about props... :) :)

Re: Carbs...Idle...Timing....Am I missing something??

Food for thought on the idle, plugs and smoking thing.

As far as the plugs thing...it might just be that i have the extra oil in the fuel..the smoke is blue and hangs around for long time with no wind . so i'm sure it's not steam.. would to much oil prevent the motor from idling around 650 without dying.?? I have about 4 gals left before straight gas. so i'll wait to run it with straight before making any rash changes..but i have noticed that the VRO is clicking approx once every two seconds at idle..

Re: Carbs...Idle...Timing....Am I missing something??

If the oil pump is clicking that often at idle we may have a restriction or air leak. In either situation the oil side of the pump will pump more oil.

We should look into running it on a seperate fuel tank and hose.

Re: Carbs...Idle...Timing....Am I missing something??

think its fuel supply related ??
I've been suspicous of the quick connector i put on the new fuel tank...it just seems to be a loose fit with the hose..there is some slop when its connected i can move it in and out about 3-4 mm..could air be getting in here and causing this.?? the old tank had a intergrated quick connector and it didn't have any play at all but this being different style i figured it was just inherant...

if not tank connector, how else should i track down air leak and where should i start ?

Re: Carbs...Idle...Timing....Am I missing something??

okay i've checked up to VRO no restrictions in fuel. i disconnected the oil line at motor conecctor oil bulb is a little hard to squeeze but oil does flow easily...when i pupmed the bulb this afternoon before my test run it was hard...this after sitting for three days of no use.this would leave me to believe that it's not leaking...so where should i now look for a leak and i did confirm the VRO is clicking about once every 1.5-2 seconds at idle. This i assume is the reason for the exessive smoke not the extra oil in the tank...I'm using alot of oil out of the oil tank...it used almost a quart of oil out of the tank but only 4 gals fuel...

Re: Carbs...Idle...Timing....Am I missing something??

Strike that it used 2.5 quarts of oil for four gals of gas...something is definitly going wrong in the oiling system ....how do i rectify this...or at least trouble shoot it...
