Carbuertor Service?? Level of ?? Contaminated fuel...

Hello... Q:? Recently purchased a 1964 Triton (LoneStar) with a 1964 40 HP Evinrude Lark VI. Engine runs/ran great until yesterday when I noticed that the sediment in the in-line filter that I put in before the engine was simply filthy. The gent who sold me the boat said he had cleaned and treated the on-board tank...item that I am seriously in doubt. I will be putting in a new tank and gauge in a few days...thus the Q.?

Since the boat ran fine for several hours (also for several day long trips) before the filter was visibly clogged and limped all the way back across the lake at low speed (and starts right up even now). And since it wanted to surge to a higher speed...am I correct in assuming that IT IS A FUEL SUPPLY (engine starved) problem and thus a new tank and filter will solve this issue? ALSO...if it was the gunk, am I correct to assume that the filter trapped most if not all the contaminants and thus the clogged filter was the reason for the choking off of the engine at anything over a low speed/throttle speed? AND...what is the level of Carb. service I need to do to get things back in order...a simple Carb. cleaning or will I need to disassemble...I know I need to clean the gasoline trap as well... but as the old adage says “if it ain’t broken don’t fix it”. Any wise sage advice will be very helpful. Thank you all!!

Sam, You are in the wrong forum. Let me try to answer the Qs.

The new gasoline/alcohol fuel that we are now forced to use can loosen up sediment from otherwise acceptably clean tanks and clog up the carbs. That motor has a fuel pump with a sediment bowl and filter. Find and clean it also. It wouldn't hurt to open the carb drain screw (if it has one, don't remember) and pump the bulb a few times to wash out the bowl. If the motor doesn't work better, you will likely need to remove and clean the carb.

I agree with your deduction that it is a fuel starvation problem. You could continue to run on the new filter, and be sure to have additional filters with you. If the condition persists, then there is more dirt in the tank. If the filter says clean, then it may have been a "one time" issue due to loosening up of dirt from cleaning, but not getting it all out.

Could also be from the alcohol fuels too, but my guess is that the previous owner just loosened up a bunch of crud and didn't get it all flushed out.

You didn't say how big the tank is, but you could try syphening the tank dry and see what else you can get out of it.

I also agree with Chris1965 on draining the carb bowl if possable to see if any dirt has made it that far.

If the motor was starved for fuel, then chances are that the dirt was not getting through the filter either.

Sorry for the incorrect placement Commander... buy hey, that is why my rank is so low d:)...but thank you very much for the advice... I got a great price on an 18 gallon fuel tank w/sending unit and gauge (80.00 w/shipping) and figure swapping out the original 20 gallon steel on-board would be a good idea as opposed to draining, drying and coating the tank.,..since I found out long ago with my 67 MG that the coating eventually decomes debris itself... Have agood day gents!!
