Hello... Q:? Recently purchased a 1964 Triton (LoneStar) with a 1964 40 HP Evinrude Lark VI. Engine runs/ran great until yesterday when I noticed that the sediment in the in-line filter that I put in before the engine was simply filthy. The gent who sold me the boat said he had cleaned and treated the on-board tank...item that I am seriously in doubt. I will be putting in a new tank and gauge in a few days...thus the Q.?
Since the boat ran fine for several hours (also for several day long trips) before the filter was visibly clogged and limped all the way back across the lake at low speed (and starts right up even now). And since it wanted to surge to a higher speed...am I correct in assuming that IT IS A FUEL SUPPLY (engine starved) problem and thus a new tank and filter will solve this issue? ALSO...if it was the gunk, am I correct to assume that the filter trapped most if not all the contaminants and thus the clogged filter was the reason for the choking off of the engine at anything over a low speed/throttle speed? AND...what is the level of Carb. service I need to do to get things back in order...a simple Carb. cleaning or will I need to disassemble...I know I need to clean the gasoline trap as well... but as the old adage says if it aint broken dont fix it. Any wise sage advice will be very helpful. Thank you all!!
