I've been tearing my hair out on this one. I recently acquired a 1980 evinrude 85 HP V4 It will not start unless I spray some primer fuel into the cylinders. Then it starts but doesn't run right. I have checked everything. Its got good spark and compression. I cleaned the jets twice!. checked everything for air leaks or kinks in lines. thoroughly cleaned the carbs etc. Tested the pump. So heres what I have come up with. I just found out the carbs are not originals for this motor . They are from a 1979. I am not sure if the jets are compatible. How can I determine what size the jets are and how do I determine what size jets are appropriate? I just noticed that the baffles in the carburetor throat do not open fully. I will have to adjust that but I don't know if that will cause the poor idling and non start. Any advice would be thankfully received

The 79 carburetors are likely exactly the same as a 1980 model.-----Good spark and good compression mean nothing.------What are the numbers found with a known to be good gauge ?----And does spark jump a gap of 7/16" when cranking it over ?

Comp check by a mechanic showed 90 lbs (cold) spark was tested to jump 1/2" as per the manual. I researched the carbs and found that 79 and 80 years have different carbs, They are similar but according to the Evinrude manual they are not the same . 1980 carb from manual.pngThis is a diagram from the Evinrude manual for a 1980 V4 . It's called a tri jet1980 carb from parts co.pngThis is a diagram of a 1979 carb. As you can see they have a different appearance.

Should make no difference in the starting ability.----Compression of 90 PSI would mean the motor is worn out here.----What manual do these pictures come from.-----The 79 and 80 model both use the same bowl gasket.----But the pictures you post show them completely different.------So something is wrong with your resources !!

Not a factory manual ---often many mistakes in these books.-----Some say these manuals belong in the wee house with the 1/4 moon in the door.

You might post a clear picture of your actual carbs front and side views, with the silencer removed.
