Re: Carpet odor removal help

^thanks to Scott Danforth and the calvinator for those great tips, and to oldjeep for holding down the fort.

Since these topics inevitably turn into fresh vs salt water, OB vs IO, fishing vs watersports: bare feet and bare bottoms prefer carpet.

Just sayin.

^+1 to the Seadek, it is sublime on the swimdeck. Once I start moonlighting as a bank robber, it may get put down throughout the rest of the cabin.

For what its worth, yes, carpet is work. however a boat full of ladies enjoying themselves is usually worth it.

The step up from here is bigger boat with teak decking.

not many ladies in a carpet-less fishing rig.

Maybe not many ladies but plenty of women! Much better company in a boat especially while fishing.

Thats an older boat and might have had the carpet replaced
I would check first and confirm that it is carpet designed for a boat
if not you are just wasting your time cleaning it

Fishing is for guys who can't ski ;)

Wow, you could get ejected from Minnesota for a statement like that. I was at an event there some time ago and someone asked the governor about a survey that stated 97% of the people fish. He replied that he'd have to see what was wrong with the other 3%. :)

But back to the carpet. Bleach kills mould. Vinegar does not kill mould well. Mould is often the cause of smells but it can be just the wet carpet. (A wet wool sweater smells but it's not from mould)
I've had glue down carpet for many years with no smells. Some people use a pressure washer to deep clean their carpet. I have not tried this. The sun is my best friend for keeping the carpet smell free.

OK everyone, Thanks for the ideas. Here's what I decided to do: I followed Scott Danforths recommendation. Sprayed vinegar yesterday, gave her a good laundry detergent soaking today & followed with power wash. Got a really clean bilge. Will update whether it successfully solved the "odor when wet problem" after we're out next time. Thanks everyone for the ideas!

In my former boat, after cleaning the carpet with soap and water, I would put liquid Downy fabric softener on it. I would then vacuum out the fabric softener, let it sit in the sun during the day and put a fan on it at night until dry. It smelled nice and remained soft. I did this a couple of times a year depending upon what was spilled.
