IMHO thinner is better, less water retention. Or get rid of it all together, I can't wait to get rid of mine! I don't believe in carpet on a boat.

I get ribbed, corduroy looking, lightweight indoor-outdoor deck carpet at Home Depot for the casting deck on my jon boat, about an 8'x8' piece for $48. This is a light-weight, needled nonwoven carpet, not the thicker, tufted kind that holds water and won't dry. It's a dark green/black color, light weight, rather thin, easy to cut and install, dries very quickly, lasts about 5 years, jerk it up, put down new. Good Luck!

Thin stuff makes sense. Especially if you install it with snaps it will be much easier to handle when you want to pull it out to clean it. Maybe put a good coat of epoxy paint over your rough glass first, then do the snap in carpet. There's some times I don't want the carpet in my boat (fishing, wet doggies, etc) so it's nice to be able to do it both ways.

I have stuff room work on mine and it is 28oz and stays wet for along time, it is nice and cushy and I hate wearing shoes on the boat unless I have to, watch your color though, I have really light green adn it gets HOT so the lighter the better but the thin stuff should work out fine.

I have an aluminum boat with marine ply so I am not worried about water on the deck.

I'm guessing the spray in bedliners for pickup trucks would be to heavy? Or how 'bout the rubber aut undercoating stuff? That can be rolled on, which will smooth out the rough fiberglass AND provide a surface that is easy to clean. Or would that get hot?

You put carpets in your house and even in your car, but carpets in boats are a dumb idea. THey hold water, help rot the deck and are impossible to clean worm goop out of. Throw a fish or 2 on them and then they smell bad as well.

Nautolex invented the non-skid vinyl deck. It is cheep to buy and works well almost forever. Now there are several other competitors on the market, so you have your choice of color and price.

My family boat has a vinyl floor that looks like new and its 27 years old. I special ordered it from the factory that way and it was a good decision. My 2 year old fishing boat was ordered with the same product.

Hose it down, brush it off, or whatever. I never wear shoes in the boat either. Hasn't bothered my feet yet!

Simple solution...get your self two boat's...One for playing and getting dirty and one for those balmy evening cruises..See how simple that is..

I'm thinking about this for my boat: http://hydroturf.com/pwc_matcolors.php It's either going to be the hydroturf or the Skid-No-More from iboats. Still havn't decided; but I do want to remove the carpet from my boat. I'll give it a couple coats of epoxy before I apply the final finish, whichever I go with.

I personally prefer carpet over glass or vinyl, but do think the best option is snap in stuff. Keep it thin, take it off and hose it down after each adventure, and keep it on the dock when out fishing.

veritas, that hydro turf is awesome but isn't it hella-expensive? I don't think i've seen someone do much more than a PWC or swim platform with it.

Re: carpet opinons

To say a person is dumb for having carpet in their boat is definately an "opinion"......we have had carpet in our 1977 Royal American since day one when we got it brand new, the boat is as solid today as it was then, no rot, but it also helps if you actually take care of the boat.......which includes the carpet.

The mats are 40"X62" and are 59 + 20 if you want 3M adhesive backing.

The sheets are 47"X86" and start at 40 + 30 for the 3M adhesive backing.

I can cover my entire cockpit (which seats six) for 100-188, depending upon my choice of product.

Considering the quality, is that really so expensive?

Re: carpet opinons

It depends on the boat. If you are fishing, scrap the carpet idea. If you have a 40 ft yacht, you probably want snap in carpet. It can be snapped out to wash the boat. If you have a custom 25 ft performance boat, then you want 40 oz carpet thats glued in and looks sharp.

I own a carpet store, and I'm a marine carpet dealer. Look at www.Corinthianmarine.com for the different choices in carpet. I'd get the nicer stuff if your going to do it. 14 oz is very lightweight.

Stay away from home depot unless you want your boat to look like you "glued in some home depot carpet". Again, It depends on the boat.
Just my opinion, it's worth what you paid for it :)

Mine too.. No rot.. Carpet is 24 years old and still looks good.:D. Boat has also never been left in the weather.. I wish it was snap in, but my next boat will have carpet too.. Just hope for snap in..

No not at all. I thought it was way worse than that. That's right in line with carpet or vinyl.

Re: carpet opinons

Absolutely love the carpet in mine but I don't fish from it, either. Snaps in & out, stays clean, cool on the feet, etc. I got my from http://www.snapincarpet.com.

Had a 21' fishing boat that had snap in carpet also. Removed it before fishing, left it in for just a day cruising on the water. Softens the ride quite a bit. Get the heavier stuff if you can swing it. Forget the HD stuff. I think you'd be happier in the long run.
