You're right....the weapon count per household is a lot higher than what most people (particularly Canadians) even know. That said, carrying them on your person is a no-no and hand guns are off the menu.
The arguments for/against this issue are endless and will undoubtedly be brought to bear even here on this thread. However the murder/violence rate is pretty low. Here in Victoria (population 300-500k) I think we just had our 2nd murder. Odds our we will probably do the average murder rate of something around 10 a year I think?
I have my share of rifles...no hand guns (obviously). The thought of a public open air/food court/crowded hall threat is not even on the radar screen. I'm ok with leaving it that way...I've got enough to keep my mind busy without that fear included in my day I guess.

I'm with kenny on this one. Up here very few people carry guns for personal protection. Most people up here think people who carry weapons are chickens. But on the other hand i think the average weapon count per household is about 5 guns.
