Whatever the outcome of his health issues, it ought to give us the opportunity to somehow stop the ineffective sanction silliness that we have been party to. Start a new dialogue with Raul.
The cold war is over, there is no longer a communist "threat", and why give a new Cuban regime cause to continue to blame the USA for their problems? Open Cuba to travel and trade, and perhaps they can figure out a way bringing their people out of poverty.
Dialogue... Heheheehee.PW2 said:I don't think they necessarily "accept" him as a leader.

Incorrect. Cuba is just as communist as it was two days ago (and that's pretty much communist). If Cuba was not such a "threat" and if it were a capitalist society as opposed to a socialistic dictatorship, I'd agree with you on opening-up trade status and freeing the Cuban people from their socialistic poverty. But it's not. Castro, when told of a group of Cuban entrepenour food stands, nipped such burgeoning caplitalist outbursts in the bud by giving all Cuban houshoilds a rice cooker....Nummy.PW2 said:The cold war is over, there is no longer a communist "threat", and why give a new Cuban regime cause to continue to blame the USA for their problems? Right. Canada. Is it starting to make sense to you? Canada, as great a country as it is, is looking at Cuba as a model of medical care for it's people. Good for them, but by a show of hands, I don't think America is ready for that.PW2 said:I have Canadian friends that travel to Cuba all the time. Their resorts are very nice, and very inexpensive.
The west is not going to succumb to socialist dictatorships,PW.At least not by majority.PW2 said:Sure, 12 foot, they are communist, and they are not going to succomb to western pressures (or values) overnight, but neither has any other formerly communist country, incl and especially Russia.
In order to communicate with Cuba's current regime it must be recognised first. To recognise it is to legitamize it. It is illegitamate. Ask any Cuban in Miami. Ask Elian's Miami family.PW2 said:Communication is the key, and pretending we are there to help the country, as opposed to conquering it, is the first step of a long journey.
"Dialogue" with Castro? It's been tried. There was a major reason why even a liberal president ( JFK) brought us to the brink of nuclear exchanges with the soviets over this small island, PW.PW2 said:12 foot...
By only talking to our friends that agree with us, we will be left with fewer and fewer people to talk to.
