I was heading back to the ramp , yesterday evening , and I slowed down to pass a boat sitting , apparently fishing .
As I pass , the guy asks me if I know anything about motors .
Uh oh , I come alongside and ask him what happened .
The guy had just bought the boat , used 18 astroglass bassboat with a 125 Force .
This was his first boat , and , he was pretty green .
The guy said it would not go into gear .
He started it up and it idled great , except for a sickening metallic clanking noise .
This happened , after getting a log wedged between the motor and his transom .
I told him his shift linkage was probably knocked out of adjustment , and , it wasn't going to be fixed on the water .
I offered him a tow .
He had put in at a ramp 3 miles upstream from where he was sitting , so I offered to tow him 1/4 mile to the ramp I used , and ,drive him to pick up his tow rig , since I did not relish pulling a ~1,200 lb boat upstream with my 12' tinny and 9.9 Merc .
The tow went better than expected , although we sure didn't set any speed records , lol .
We tied our rigs up the ramp , and I drove him back to get his tow rig while his wife and kids watched the boats .
I offered him some sage advice on the way , such as only going UPSTREAM with a new boat that is an unknown quantity , and , having a working trolling motor .
His trolling motor was a POS , and , worked on the Ouija Board principal .
Fun and games when we got his rig to the ramp and attempted to retrieve the boat ...
I didn't have the heart to tell him that he was sitting right below a Rescue/EMS station , and , although they would not let him take out from their ramp due to insurance reasons , they had a telephone , and , restrooms , they probably would let him and his family use .
The good news for this guy is that the dealer he bought the boat from is open this morning and may cover the repairs , or , at least a portion of them .
Oh , I also caught some decent bass and bream .
These were released also .
