I was heading back to the ramp , yesterday evening , and I slowed down to pass a boat sitting , apparently fishing .
As I pass , the guy asks me if I know anything about motors .
Uh oh , I come alongside and ask him what happened .

The guy had just bought the boat , used 18 astroglass bassboat with a 125 Force .
This was his first boat , and , he was pretty green .

The guy said it would not go into gear .
He started it up and it idled great , except for a sickening metallic clanking noise .
This happened , after getting a log wedged between the motor and his transom .

I told him his shift linkage was probably knocked out of adjustment , and , it wasn't going to be fixed on the water .
I offered him a tow .

He had put in at a ramp 3 miles upstream from where he was sitting , so I offered to tow him 1/4 mile to the ramp I used , and ,drive him to pick up his tow rig , since I did not relish pulling a ~1,200 lb boat upstream with my 12' tinny and 9.9 Merc .

The tow went better than expected , although we sure didn't set any speed records , lol .
We tied our rigs up the ramp , and I drove him back to get his tow rig while his wife and kids watched the boats .

I offered him some sage advice on the way , such as only going UPSTREAM with a new boat that is an unknown quantity , and , having a working trolling motor .
His trolling motor was a POS , and , worked on the Ouija Board principal .
Fun and games when we got his rig to the ramp and attempted to retrieve the boat ...

I didn't have the heart to tell him that he was sitting right below a Rescue/EMS station , and , although they would not let him take out from their ramp due to insurance reasons , they had a telephone , and , restrooms , they probably would let him and his family use . :D

The good news for this guy is that the dealer he bought the boat from is open this morning and may cover the repairs , or , at least a portion of them .

Oh , I also caught some decent bass and bream .
These were released also . :p

Good for you for giving a helping hand. Could have said "don't know a thing about motors" and kept goin'.

Not in my nature , unless they were arrogant pricks... .
I spent 10+ years at that aforementioned Rescue/EMS building , as a volunteer , no way I turn down someone in need when I have the capacity to help , and , it is wanted .

Back out this morning .
Fishing was good , but , no boats this time .:D

I don't get it... You helped him go get his vehicle but he wasn't allowed to pull the boat, but could use the bathroom?

How did he get his boat out of the water?

I think he meant that the station was close to where he broke down, but he tow him all the way to the other ramp as he knew they would not let him pull his boat in the ems ramp.

Yep , guy was sitting 50' from the Rescue/EMS ramp , and , directly below the building .
There were restroom facilities at the ramp I towed him to .
I noticed his wife and kids made an immediate bee line for them when they tied up his boat at the courtesy dock .
