CD-11 and TD-20 probs

Here's any easy one for ya! On my 54 CD-11 only the top spark plug has fire, the bottom one does not.. The plug wires appear to be fine just looking at them.. What direction should I head next?
For my TD-20 I pour gas in the tank and it almost immediately started dripping gas from the carb or pump? Not really sure but when I turned the fuel valve on it went from a drip to a steady stream, and when I pulled the rope a couple times it started squirting fuel out the top of either the carb or fuel pump.Question is which is it that has the problem the pump or the carb? And also can it be fixed or does it need replaced?
Thanks!

Re: CD-11 and TD-20 probs

Regarding the CD, you will need to start by pulling the flywheel. If the coils have not yet been replaced, and are cracked, they are due for a change. If they have been replaced, time to look to the points. File them down, re gap to 020, then clean with acetone. That will likely take care of your problem.

Regarding the TD, their fuel systems can be a little troublesome. They do not have a fuel pump. YOu are likely thinking of the primer. The leather seals in them deteriorate and need to be replaced if the leak while you prime it. If fuel leaks out of the hole at the top of the carb, the float pin is likely stuck. Regardless, time to rebuild/clean the carb. The following article will help with this.

On the CD, (and many other OMC's with the universal ignition) people tend to replace coils and shove the old sparg plug lead into the new coil and wonder why they loose spark. Often times, it's because the connection from the coil goes to pot. And they also forget to trim the spark plug end a give it a fresh new connection. It's always best to replace the leads, at the same time as the coils. That will ensure more years of trouble free service.

On the TD, you'll want to make sure the carb is completely clean. In the jets, they actually used leather seals. Ohhhh yea. Who woulda thought.....leather in an outboard. You'll find them around the jet screws and that was what they used for packing in those days. The shut off valve commonly gave trouble, on motors that sat for years. The oil would harden up in them and plug them off solid. I had some that I had to run a drill in them to clean them out.

Wow the page in which you sent me the link too looks really really informative I bookmarked it for when the time comes! Do you have a preferred place for getting all your old OMC parts such as coils, coil leads, and impellers n such? Also I just kinda skimmed through the carb rebuild but didnt see whether Ill need to just make the new gaskets or is there a gasket set available for them old carbs?

Thanks again and again!

Re: CD-11 and TD-20 probs

I get my coils on ebay. The spark plug wires need to be solid core, not automotive type. Go to your local NAPA where you can buy it by the foot. Alot of the stuff you will be surprised that the dealer can still get for you, such as impellers.

I restore alot of motors, so I no longer buy carb kits, simply make my own out of gasket material. That is what you will have to do for the TD anyways if the gasket is shot. Just trace it and cut it out. For the CD you may want to buy a carb kit though from the dealer for your first time.

Women just dont get it do they! My wife seems to think that outboards laying around our house is an eyesore, what nerve ;) At least I cleared a path to the washing machine for her.
