I have a 1975 9.9 Evinrude that we are trying to put electric start on. I have a 1979 9.9 as a donor motor. After moving the cover and installing the starter, wiring and everything needed I find that the electric start flywheel won't work with the magneto ignition. I actually tested it before hand and it makes spark, the keyway is just in a different spot on the CD flywheel and it makes it at the wrong time.
I do not have all of the CD ignition to move the 1979 to the 1975. I would need a switchbox I think, and none of the ignition components is proven to me. The 1979 motor was blown up when I got it and in pieces. The 1975 motor runs fine, the guy is just getting older and doesn't want to pull it any more.
I layed the two flywheels out side by side and got my calipers out and started checking stuff. The flywheels look to be the same in every way, except that the key is not located in the same spot.
The question for the forum is, can I get someone to cut a new key in the CD flywheel and use it on the magneto ignition? I am a retired toolmaker so I know it is possible to do it, but will it work?
