CD flywheel to magneto ignition?

I have a 1975 9.9 Evinrude that we are trying to put electric start on. I have a 1979 9.9 as a donor motor. After moving the cover and installing the starter, wiring and everything needed I find that the electric start flywheel won't work with the magneto ignition. I actually tested it before hand and it makes spark, the keyway is just in a different spot on the CD flywheel and it makes it at the wrong time.

I do not have all of the CD ignition to move the 1979 to the 1975. I would need a switchbox I think, and none of the ignition components is proven to me. The 1979 motor was blown up when I got it and in pieces. The 1975 motor runs fine, the guy is just getting older and doesn't want to pull it any more.

I layed the two flywheels out side by side and got my calipers out and started checking stuff. The flywheels look to be the same in every way, except that the key is not located in the same spot.

The question for the forum is, can I get someone to cut a new key in the CD flywheel and use it on the magneto ignition? I am a retired toolmaker so I know it is possible to do it, but will it work?

Never tried it, but my suspicion is it will not work. The magnets must pass by the driver coil at the right time, reversing polarity at the correct time, as the breaker points open. I dunno, some more checking to do.

I wouldn't do it because that is an expensive and hard to find flywheel. Why not spend $150 or less and put a good ignition in it.

The magneto ignition is all new recently, down to OEM looking coils and all the components under the flywheel.
I'm trying to help this man out without spending a lot of his money.

I am correct that there is no Magneto ignition version of the electric start 9.9 or 15, right? I know we had a 75 hp OMC in the 70's that did not charge the batteries and I assume was magneto ignition.

They made many of the 74-76 9.9/15 hp motors with electric start. There Is an electric Start flywheel on Ebay right now For $147.00 for a 74-76model. The Flywheel is the expensive part of the electric start conversion. I have seen complete CDI ignitioni for $75.00 on ebay. Converting to a CDI ignition would probably be the cheapest. Don't know of any 75s made in the 70s that did not charge the battery.

Cheapest/easiest way to upgrade motor to electric start is to sell it and buy a motor with electric start

I won't argue that Scott, but this man asked me to do this and I'm way into it now. If there is a flywheel out there that will work I'll just get one.

We bought a Thompson 17 footer in about 1972 that had a 75 Evinrude on it. The dealer said it did not charge the battery and would have to be charged between trips. We used it until about 75 with no problems and traded it for a glass boat with a Chrysler 105.

Thanks for your help.

Looking at a 10EL75C, (my bad I'm working with a 10RL75C Johnson and an Evinrude 10935B donor). iBOATS does not list the flywheel in their parts breakdown, but the competition does and shows an updated BRP flywheel as available and in stock for $139. I know what my options are now, and I'll talk it over with the owner of the Johnny. Thanks for tips guys.

Imuss53, could you try for a test to install the flywheel without the key at the place you would machine the slot . If you secure the flywheel nut properly, the flywheel should not move. Hope this help you.Ronald
