Ok. After reading everybodies stories over he past year..I have to fess up to a series of unfortunate events. The company that I work for gives us a cell phone for when we are on the road...(boy I hope nobody from work reads this)

1st Death - Found new lab puppy using as a chew toy. Brought pieces into work in a plastic sandwich bag. Company replaced.

2nd Death - About a month later, found lab chewing on cell phone...lcd broken. Brought cell phone into work and told them that it got banged while at a store. Company replaced.

3rd Death - About 7 months later (Thursday), on boat in local lake. Company had just given me a new belt clip for cell phone...turned and heard a "plop". Looked and cell phone and new clip are gone. Ethan (Eggkr8) jumps in to look for it.. atleat 2 feet of silt on bottom...lost. Go into work and tell them this...they need to order a new phone so the give me the Owner of the company's favorite cell phone spare (they cant get the model anymore so they bought here this one in case something goes wrong this her first). $500 cell phone. Irreplaceable.

4th Death - (Sunday 3 days later) Sooooo.....went out on boat for a dive....while setting anchor, big lobster boat comes by..wake rocks my boat..I go overboard. I am not injured. Climb back onboard and realize that the belt clip is still on my belt but the cell phone is not. Look through everything onboard. No phone. Monday morning have to go into work a report cell phone lost (failed to mention that it was last at sea). They not happy. I offer to pay for cell phone...they say no, but I have to tell Company owner that I lost it. Later that week my new phone comes in. I stop using belt clips...phone is always deap in a coat pocket or pants pocket. SAFE.

5th Death - About a week later. Alittle chilly so I have my windbreaker on..cell phone in pocket of jacket. Going out on boat. Get to the ramp and nobody there....great. Get boat ready (5min) look back and 8 boats are now in line behind me. I am launching solo. I rush the launch...boat glides off trailer faster than normal..bowline tied to trailer is alittle too long...boat looks like it is gong to hit another boat at dock so I jump out of truck...run down dock..make a grab at boat...lose balance and go for a swim. Get boat secured. Hope in truck soaking wet...park truck and realize that new cell phone was in pocket...dead. Took out battery and left in truck to dry. Went for a great day on boat. At home, took apart phone...dried completely...cleaned with q-tip and rubbing alcohol..reassembled...still dead. Brought phone to work on monday and told them it dead (failed to mention why).

Now have a new phone...and the boating season is starting up again....wish it luck!!! :D

-JustMrWill

Get a waterproof bag for the phone and a raw hide for the lab. My lab got my Garmin etrex when she was a pup. The cat was more challenging so she dropped the GPS before she she chewed it up.

Re: Cell Phones Beware!

I was fishing off the bank of Bird Creek a few years ago. The tide was coming in (we have 30 ft difference in tides). The tide had gotten up to my knees when, while switching spinners, I dropped it. I bent over to pick it up and PLOP!! Cell phone came out of pocket. I was able to grab it before it hit bottom and put back in pocket, securely. Finished fishing and back at the truck now. The phone is dead, all wet inside. Oh well, it was a cheapie. I took the cover off, the battery off and set it all on the defroster. Turned the heat up hot, and blower on high and started home. Oh Yeah, it was about 80 deg that day. I kept trying the phone on the way home, would put the battery back on and try to turn it on. After all, it looked dry. It would start dialing a random number from the memory and I wouldn't be able to stop it or turn it off. So off comes battery, back on defroster. After 45 minutes, it turned back on and was able to call the wife.
Phone worked great until a snowmachining trip, where it got wet AND cold. Never would work after that one :)

AK Chappy

Re: Cell Phones Beware!

You blew through 5 phones in 8 months! You must have a very understanding company you're working for. If I did that they would issue me a calling card insted of a cell phone. :D :p

I dropped mine in the gutter one day. After it dried out, it was happy. Now the remote for the car alarm wasnt so forgiving when it went swimming with me one day. :)

Re: Cell Phones Beware!

Have a watertight container. I have one and I put my wallet, cell phone, anything important in it.
Now, as long as it does not float away, it's all good.

I use a spare bucket the pool chlorine comes in.
By law the lids must be water proof. Camera, binoculars, Spare cigarettes & lighter, anything that HAS to stay dry.

The buckets are large enough to use as a toilet if required - preferrably after removing the other contents.

Strange, but the rougher the weather, the less likely a toilet is needed.

put the phone in the boat in a dry spot BEFORE you leave the prep lot. Don't take it out again until your BACK at that lot.
