After honing a cylinder block the Evinrude service manual tells you to chamfer the cylinder block with a ball or other suitable hone. Can I use a ball hone and run it from the outside in, spin a little and call it good? How much is enough?

Get a ball hone the same size as the cylinder and run it up and down in the cylinder a few times and you should be okay. That's what the manual meant. Clean the cylinder up good after the honing.

Boy I guess I was reading the manual wrong! Good thing I asked.

Just make sure the ports don't have any sharp edges on them or other wise it's ring break time. Been there.

If you just honed the block I doubt you will have any sharp edges, boring is a different matter. Also hope you used a good hone and not one of the spring type.

I used a NAPA stone cylinder hone. Is that ok? I knocked the glaze off and put some crosshatch in.

I still use a ball hone as it gets in the ports better.
