Changing Gears on a 60HP 3 cylinder Mercury

Hi - the gears in my Mercury are in a pretty poor state. I bought an old gearbox with a broken Skeg to do a transplant!

Getting the shaft and pinion out was a pain. After removing the water pump I ended up having to chisel out the plastic water seal until I reached the bearing lock but. I don't want to be as brutal when I remove the pinion and shaft on the gearbox that I am keeping! Is there a way to do it or do I just order new seals and assume that I will be forcing entry again?

Any advice appreciated

Thanks

Garnett

I suggest a Mercury factory service manual. It will have the necessary info on disassembly, reassembly, as well as the info regarding shimming, backlash, pinion depth adjustments.

Thanks - I have the service manual and there is no mention of shims. There weren't any when I took the unit apart and none on the parts list. Mercury in the U.K. know nothing about them. The pinion on my unit floats on a spline. They have supplied me with a service kit for the seals. Any more information would be appropriate. Thanks

Are you saying there is no nut on the bottom of the driveshaft to hold the pinion in place ?------serial # is ??----Hard / not hard to believe that some clerk would tell you that there is no shimming involved !!

Hi - sounds like we have some clarity! No there is no lock but on the pinion m. It sits on a spline and floats in and out as required. Further up the shaft is a bearing that is held in place by a castle but. An oil seal sits above this then the plastic base of the water pump. I did notice that there are three different types in the parts list. The other 2 don't have a castle but so I guess these are the shim type?

# 19 is the shim/s under upside down bearing and that a bigfoot unit. The pinion does not float on shaft as its tightend snug to driveshaft. Maybe you mean the whole driveshaft assy move up /down as these gears do push apart and preload upper bearing. You still will need shimming as the housings are not machined the same.

Hi All - This is making more sense now. My diner unit wasn't shimmed but the one I am repairing is. While striping my unit it looks like there is damage to the gear selector from the broken gear. I want to take the selector from my donor box and put it in mine. I have the service manual but I can't see how to release the gear selector shaft. Any advice appreciated Thanks
