I have removed the "O" rings with a hooked ice pick tool, and then using a hollow tip nail punch to push the ball down, I was able to re-insert a new ring. The punch first goes through the ring and then down to the ball. Ya gotta be careful not to scratch the steel ball

yup gotcha I found an answer to the question in the mean time... check this webpage out, it's got a bit of info. on the pressure tanks but the coolest part is it has photocopied news posts from evinrude about fixing the tanks and fittings .. http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/02/columns/max/02/wawrzyniak.htm

Re: changing orings on pressure fitting

If the o-rings have been in there for the last 40 years they are probably hard as a rock, making picking them out nearly impossible. If that is the case, take the fitting apart. Sacrifice a 5/64" Allen wrench (long series) to make a tool. Cut a piece off the allen wrench 2 1/4" long. Put that piece down through the hole in the nipple and drive the brass bushing out of the fuel connector. Catch the pieces, there is a flat washer and the check valve, and a spring in there. Remove the o-ring from the bushing, lay a new one in it and press the parts back in the connector housing.

yeah that's good advice admiral f t , i ended up using a couple paper clips bent straight, (wouldn't advise this as they're to soft) and the oring being so hard broke it into about 4 chunks each. It got the job done... thx all

Use a couple picks. I use a stainless steel dental pick and a small screw driver style hook. You could substitute a paper clip for the dental pick. I use the dental pick to push the rod down and then pick out the o-ring with the hook. I've pulled out o-rings as hard as rocks using this method. Usually only takes a minute.

FR, sorry to hear about the "o-ring recall". I got excited when I read that you found a super cheap substitute for the OMC o-rings. I was ready to buy a bunch myself.

I prefer F-R's method. Takes less time with less frustration and less risk of bits of rotted o-ring to be left in there. Press the brass caps out, reassemble and you're done! It's even easier if you have one of the fittings with the threaded in fuel nips...
